Interesting. It's pretty cool to see little snippets of anime/manga stuff in live-action US TV.

I recall that Everwood also had a character who was into manga and comics.

I don't know of anyone desperate enough to sell drugs in order to finance their manga/comics though. Seems a little far-fetched to me... but I managed to catch it on a friend's Tivo.

It's actually a pretty good show. I like the fact that it shows that even a church-going, religious family can have their share of troubles (like my family, for instance.)

Best enjoy it while it lasts, which won't likely be long since the premiere drew only a 2.7 rating among adults 18 to 49 despite all the free publicity over the controversy.

16 year old.

Selling marijuana.

To finance her manga.

O_O okay... how many 16-year-old mangaka-wannabes (and I would be one) "NEED" to "finance" at all, particularly with the costs as high as the profits from marijuana? If you combine costs of pen, ink, paper, tones, etc, it really shouldn't come to over $50.

*pause*

Or was she trying to buy a legit copy of Photoshop? ><

(and when we refer to "yaoi," do we mean gay relationships or gay porn?)

Oh well, I'm interested now. Maybe I'll take a look.

I didn't get to see it but my parents told me about it and how one if the main characters sold manga to draw manga. I was surprised that they loved it since they were pretty religious.

("G"...."E"....."C")

Once again we have a mainstream entity (in this case, [the] N[ational] B[roadcasting] C[ompany]) who doesn't know what they're talking about. ANN said that it didn't look anything like a "traditional" manga. No doubt, it probably really wasn't a manga at all, just an American comic that tries using similar techniques.

Also, I too have never heard about any cases where an aspiring comic artist (Japanese or American) ever got arrested for selling marijuana in order to "finance" their work (they portray creating manga as expensive?). This is likely just the usual dramatic exploitation you find in prime-time dramas which tend to be 90% serious (i.e., they probably just did that for the purposes of dramatic effect). I'm beginning to think we might be looking at a possible misrepresentation of not just manga itself, but also (aspiring) comic writers in general.

It wouldn't surprise me if the show disappeared within a couple weeks.

Why yaoi of all things? Why not hardcore hentai? It pisses me off how popular yaoi is, srsly.

I can see you've never published doujinshi. Never mind dealing dime bags, you've got to build an empire like Tony Montana to pay those printing bills. "Who put this thing together?" you'll say in the artists' alley. "Me!"

It can take a small fortune to get your manga published or any work for that matter. Especially if you do it yourself.

Now if you were submitting manga to a publisher for them to review and then publish it would still cost a lot since you would have to send off dozens of copies of the manuscript. Then there is postage.

Lots of manga artists often work regular jobs sometimes two or three to just get the money needed to do manga before they hit it big.

Why are you teed off that it is popular? It sounds really bigoted in regards to the subject matter unless you explain in a nonbigoted fashion.

Is it the artwork? Pushing other manga off the shelves? Storylines?

I wouldn't be surprised that religious people would like the Book of Daniel if they watched it. Look who is against it the most bigoted people on Earth who hadn't even watched it yet but were just going off on what the show's website said of the characters. Of course fundies act all high and mighty about drinking, homosexuality but one finds they doth protest too much.

In case the doth protest too much doesn't ring a bell it bascially means that one is actually doing what they are against in fact in abundance.

Well, she was making a manga-influenced comic based on her gay brother's life. She may have been going more for shonen-ai which is tamer than yaoi which is gay porn. I'm not into that stuff but I agree that a lot of times the word yaoi is used for shonen ai mangas by mistake. I've called some shonen ai shows in the past yaoi by mistake.

Hey, I'm a big Christian and I watched Book of Daniel and enjoyed it. It was true to life (except for the selling drugs to support manga, that was really far-fetched.)

It's the dumb fangirls. I hate every last one of them.

You think I don't know this? The article said yaoi. I don't feel like sitting through that show just to confirm so as far as I'm concerned, it's yaoi and yaoi is TERRIBLE. I'd first look at the grossest guro before I look at yaoi.
