I've noticed that too. I like it some of the titles though, so no complaints. Death Note is an excellent manga that I think has a creative design for Ryuuk. No bishies, for one thing.

Well, can't say I can complain about Death Note or Bleach.

The afterlife and spirits and such have always been a part of people's imaginations and beliefs everywhere. And it makes a very nice plot device/concept.

On another note, Korea has a "death" concept similar to China's and Japan's (for obvious reasons). The formal term I guess would be "sashin" (lit. sa-death, shin-god; "sa" is pronounced like "sah") though 저승사자 ("juh-sng-sah-jah") is more commonly used.

They go around collecting the souls/spirits of people who've just died, or people just about to die, and take them to the other world.

Unless you're just talking about Ryuuk, I don't know what you mean "No bishies". Light surely is a bit of a pretty boy, in an American Psycho sorta way. L is a bit of a goofy pretty boy. Though I will say it's done in a way quite different from many bishonen and the book is quite different. It's also #$(#ING AWESOME!

Also, the manga Sky High comes to mind. Kinda reminded me of Neil Daiman's Death. I got the movie based on teh manga, but haven't seen it. Haven't read too much of the manga either.

I think I read somewhere that Ryuuk could have easily been a bishounen, but he isn't. I suppose that's what it means. At lot of manga has this trend, but they all portray death gods differently. Bleach is very different from Death Note, and I suppose the Fullmoon shinigami are unigue in their "onion-ramen" thing. (I never really understood where it came from.) I happen to like these types of charatcers in manga, but too much wouldn't be good.
