We're starting off with some solid lists! Out of what I watched in 2017, Dragon Maid, Little Witch Academia, Kemono Friends, and Made in Abyss were definitely noteworthy shows. I still need to watch so much! (My Hero Academia season 2, Land of the Lustrous, Scum's Wish...)

I'm in agreement about New Game!'s plot twist. spoiler[Considering how easygoing the show had been, I wasn't expecting them to go there and have Ko really leave Eagle Jump. Though having her change from leaving permanently to coming back after her time in France was a bit of a copout.]

2017 turned out to be another strong year for anime series. The titles that did not make it into my top 5 could have been in the top 5 of a less strong year. My honorable mentions and 6 to 10 titles are 6. March Comes in Like a Lion 2, 7. Blood Bocklade Battlefront & Beyond, 8. Scum's Wish, 9. Land of the Lustrous and 10. Princess Principal. My top 5 are not necessarily my sentimental favorites but rather the best shows in technical merits.

1. Attack on Titan 2 - Season one of Attack on Titan is a good anime with a cool and intriguing premise, but season two took all that, added a bunch of great stuff and made the franchise even better. The character writing and production values were the best parts of this sequel.

2. Made in Abyss - This intriguing, atmospheric and well crafted anime show was one of the best of this year. I appreciate pretty much everything this series does, but it could have been better if it had a more complete story. I look forward to its sequel, whenever that is.

3. Girls' Last Tour - I never imagined that a quiet, post apocalyptic show about two weird girls was going to be one of the best anime of the year. The production values are not mind blowing, but they always delivered beautifully atmospheric and thought provoking situations.

4. The Ancient Magus' Bride - This was one of the most hyped shows of this year and so far, it has delivered quality episodes for 12 weeks. Chise and some of the characters have been the best part of the show, but the premise and production values are also very strong.

5. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 2 - This second cour ended up not being as good and emotionally intense as the first cour, but it offers a solid conclusion to its amazing characters. Both cours of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju make an excellent drama that is very interesting and heartfelt.

As far as a memorable plot twist, it is in Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 2 when Yotaro learns the truth about Konatsu's parents deaths.

Glad to see others were affected so much by Made in Abyss, the whole sequence of Reg spoiler[attempting to cut off Riko's hand] was so brutal it was legitimately traumatizing! And the Nanachi/Mitty backstory with getting Reg to kill Mitty made me cry (which happens rarely). I think MiB deserves top honors for these moments.

Trying to pick just five for the megapoll is agonizing this year. I just modified my choices, and now 4 out of 5 of them are sequel seasons. But I want to pick so many more!
It is so hard to choose.

The ones I have selected right now are:
ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.
Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond
Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
March Comes In like a Lion
Natsume Yuujinchou Roku

I want to give votes for A Sister's All You Need, Gintama, Konohana Kitan, Konosuba, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, and Saga of Tanya the Evil as well, but I decided not to cheat this year.

As you can see, I am an indecisive person.

I really enjoyed so dang much this year. Now that the megapoll has appeared, I am realizing what a great year we had as anime fans! It was so much easier to vote last year! We had a few really obvious winners last time around, but not so much this time.

There are some shows that I haven't seen yet. Fate/Apocrypha is one of my most anticipated titles this year, but I've been waiting for it to finish before watching it so that got left out. I'm also quite interested in Inuyashiki since it's by the same dude who made Gantz.

1. Attack on Titan Season 2 was easily my number 1. Every episode was engaging. Twists and turns everywhere. A tight package that had me on the edge of my seat at all times.

2 - 5 aren't in any particular order.

Made in Abyss. Yeah, interesting world and great atmosphere heightened by its soundtrack. But I felt like the story didn't really get anywhere by the end.

My Hero Academia Season 2. I liked it more than the first season. The content was more interesting and the pacing felt faster. I liked how it handled its side characters. They were all given enough time for us to get to know them and see them in action but the show didn't dedicate entire episodes to each side character fighting some other side character.

Scum's Wish. It had interesting, complex characters maybe even a bit too insightful for teenagers. Great soundtrack too.

SukaSuka. It definitely had this year's best couple. It didn't start off that great, but after half-way point it started getting better and better and in my opinion it had this year's best finale.

Honourable mention goes to Tsuredure Children. Which was really funny and endearing. Somehow it managed to make all of its characters lovable despite being a short and having a gigantic cast. It didn't make my top 5 list because... I don't know actually. Why didn't I vote for it?

Some honorable mentions for me are Gintama, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Tsuredere Children, and Scum's Wish. Here's my Top Five:

5. Made in Abyss
This was always a well done show, but I didn't really get invested until Nanachi and Mitty's story, which had me bawling by the end. Anytime I get teary eyed, I consider it to be a major success for a show. Honestly though, Riko is the weak point of the series for me, which explains why I enjoyed it so much more while she was out of commission. That being said, I'm still looking forward to season 2.

4. Attack on Titan Season 2
When season 1 came out, it was one of the most exhilarating, edge-of-your-seat experiences I can remember having with an anime. I decided not to read ahead in the manga because I wanted to experience it again with season 2. Little did I know the wait would be 4 years. I don't know if it was quite worth that wait, but it absolutely delivered once again. From the epic reveal of the Armored/Colossus titans, to all the gripping fight scenes and of course posing more questions than it answered about the world, it was everything I wanted it to be.

3. My Hero Academia Season 2
Looking back, there was quite a bit that happened this season. Todoroki's story in the Sports festival and Stain's short but very impactful arc were the clear standouts for me but it's always fun just spending time with this class.

2. Land of the Lustrous
I almost had this as number 1, but the finale had a bit of an incomplete feel to it. Of course, that will easily be rectified with a season 2, but for now it slides down to number 2. Anyway, from start to finish, there was never a dull moment in this show. It was always gorgeous to look at and filled with such a wonderful cast of characters. Phos' arc was heart-breaking to follow but so well done. Just thinking back on everything we've seen this season, from Phos' journey to the sea and learning about the history of this world, to winter with Antarcticite, and up to the most recent episodes with the creepy/adorable Lunarian puppy, I'm already itching to rewatch this show.

1. Owarimonogatari Season 2
Monogatari is already my all-time favorite series. This season was just more of what makes it so good and I was so happy to see Mayoi back in action! Combined with the fact that it absolutely nailed the ending and gave me that sense of completeness is what pushed it just above Lustrous for the year.

As for best plot twist/moment:

I'm gonna pick two that the reviewers brought up. First would be Reiner's confession in Attack on Titan. I actually did know about this one from the manga and in both forms it's just so well done and as Jacob said, so ballsy too. I actually had to rewind because the friend I was watching with had completely missed it.

I've already touched upon it in my list, so I'll just also throw my agreement behind James' choice for Nanachi's goodbye to Mitty.

It's been pretty strong year for anime! Lots of cool shows I would qualify has great. And I feel like sharing! Picking my top 3 was pretty easy, but 4 and 5 were pretty hard.

5. Super lovers season 2

I loved the change of perspective from Haru to Ren, as he is the reason why I love the show. Seeing what he thought and how he felt about Haru personally really worked well. I just love the cast of the show. Shame we probably won't see more adapted.

4.Tales of Zestiria the X season 2

An amazing continuation of the first season. It changed lots of stuff from the original game. Some MAJOR changes even. Made for a happier ending, has the game's ending was pretty dark. Also loved the Berseria connection they made. Ufotable did good. But what really sold the show was the ending. SoreyxMikleo for life.

3.Just Because!

An amazing SoL, With amazing character developpement. The love triangle of Eita, Natsume and Komiya had to be one of the hardest war in my heart ever. However it concludes in the last episode this show easily deserves a spot so high. SoL at its best. Only beaten by...

2.Tsukigakirei

Awkward, innocent, likable, sweet and too pure. This is how both the leads won my heart. The way they grow as a young couple throughout the whole show makes for the most touching first love ever. I felt happy just watching them interact. If sweetness could kill, my overkill meter would be 10x busted.

1.My Hero Academia season 2

IMO the best shonen ever. The cast is all so colorful and so unique, with tons, TONS of character to love and empathize with. From Deku starting to feel the weight of being All Might successor, the Shinso moment, Ochako vs Bakugo, Todoroki Origins, STAIN, etc etc. The show continues to deliver the quality. BONES couldn't have made a better love letter for MHA fans. The amazing sequels of openings, the amazing ending of the medieval AU and the constant amazing animations/art makes for my favorite adaptation ever. AND when I say amazing animation and art moment, it's for every episode in the god damn show. I love how creative they were. Some of the standouts were of course the Yutapon moments, but I loved the distortion effects they gave to Iida's recipro burst and extend(with that sexy engine animation), the amazing bone chilling imagery they gave Stain, the dynamic comicbookish effects they gave to the class interactions, the extra anime original fight they gave us with Endeavor and Froppy or all the extra details they gave to Bakugo's fights to show how much his quirk could put so much strain on his body.

I'm ready to see our heroes(and villains) change the world around them has the battle of OfA and AfO continues to rage on. Season 3 is going to adapt what I consider 2 of the best shonen arcs of all time. I don't think my body is ready.

Also kudos to FUNimation for giving us a same-day simuldub for all the 1st cour. MHA is easily one of their best effort ever and I can say I am just in love with it.

Wow, end of the year, huh? I didn't get around to watching the most popular shows this season (Land of the Lustrous, Girls Last Tour, Ancient Magus Bride), and Made in Abyss I read ahead and never went back to watch the show because I was so engrossed (and depressed).

Honorable Mentions: Hero Academia S2, AOT S2, Blue Exorcist S2, Gundam IBO S2, Tanya the Evil, SukaSuka, Re:CREATORS, Symphogear AXIZ

5. Little Witch Academia
A common theme with the Winter season was that I let the show air, then binged it. I did it with this show, and I'm glad I did. The atmosphere and animation help develop the world and Luna Nova, and the direction it takes showing magic, while traditional, is slightly different. The colors are popping, the characters are great (though I would've liked more development with some), and the show itself is memorable. I am onboard the Studio Trigger hype-train.

4. Kakegurui
I wasn't planning on watching this (I was going to wait for Netflix), but I peeked at the first episode and was hooked. The extent these characters go in their gambling adventures is fun, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. The expressions of the character faces, mixed with the music and well-done animation made for a fairly-complete show. I feel bad for it now, since fewer people may end up watching it thanks for the spring 2018 release date.

3. Princess Principal
Can I get a season two? I loved this show, week to week. The steampunk era helped the story, and the character designs (IMO) worked fairly well in that environment. The option of telling the story out of order was great, and I think it worked in the show's favor. Also, Dorothy is best girl. I want to see these characters again.

2. Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 2
Ah, the show that tore up my heart. I'm not one for dramas, but I make exceptions. But historical dramas about a lacking, not-well-known-outside-of-Japan storytelling art? I LOVED Season 1, and while I agree with others that this season lacked, it did much more than other dramas would've. Also, spoiler[Yakumo's death scene. So many tears.]

1.Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
I just binged it, and I have to say, I'm glad I waited. I love all of the characters, the themes are explored and while important, don't feel weighed down. The animation was great, and the comedy was good (which I normally have a hard time connecting with in anime). I wish I could see more of these characters!

Some great lists to start with! I'll copy over what I have from the ANNcast comments.

Runners Up: Made in Abyss, Gamers, SukaSuka, Kakegurui, New Game S2. AoT S2.

Best Anime Move of the Year: A Silent Voice. This movie hit all the right notes for me and connected with me much more deeply than the other fantastic choices (Your Name, No Game No Life Zero, and In This Corner of the World.)

Top 5

1. Owarimonogatari S2. An almost perfect end to a monumental series that has changed anime forever. I can't remember the last time I've felt so satisfied capping off a long running show. Easily in my tops of all time.

2. March Comes in Like a Lion S2. While not done yet, the ride has been so emotionally poignant that I would be remiss not to have it on here.

3. My Hero Academia S2. As someone who doesn't typically like shounens and who just thought the first season was alright, the second season of MHA proved to me that I can enjoy a super hero story again after Hollywood fatigue. Easily one of the standouts for pure, raw entertainment value.

4. Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Cute, sweet, memorable, and ultimately pretty effective on evoking a love for family; whether by birth or by friendship.

5. Ancient Magus Bride. Still has a ways to go but every episode leaves me speechless from the simultaneous beauty, and horror, of it's magical world. I just want to see more of everything. Also the OVA's are a standout of animation quality and great story telling power for its short span of time.

Best Plot Twist: There were a lot of good shows for this category this year, but I have to agree that the Attack on Titan S2 twist has to take the cake. Not just because it was a huge reveal, but the quality of how they revealed it was just too perfect.

While there were a lot of bad shows I watched (I typically watch 18-24 a season) the title of Most Hated was an extremely easy choice. Scum's Wish joins School Days as the only two anime I loathe. I hated everything about the show so much that it made me stop watching anime completely for awhile. Even just hearing the OP or ED come on the radio makes my blood boil and immediately have to turn on something else. Hate hate HATE so much... Can't even write about it without getting furious Sad

All in all, 2017 turned out to be an absolutely groundbreaking year for anime. In all of my years of anime watching, I have never had so many shows that I rated so highly as this year. Hears to hoping for an even better 2018!

I am curious about how long you been watching anime. I started to really care about anime in late 2011. And even though I agree that 2017 was a very strong year for anime, 2011 and 2012 are my top years for this decade.
