*Looking at the list while staring at the gifts that are ready to ship today*

......Damn it!! If only this was posted a week ago... Sad

PS: Many limited editions listed were quickly sold out when they were first released, so I am glad to find out they were fully restocked during holiday seasons.

I think the Utena set is about $146 right now, actually. To say I'm tempted is an understatement. Sad

And no mention of the Limited edition for Season one of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans?

Not to say the 'everything Gundam Wing wouldn't be a bad thing, but a Variant finish of the Ver. 1-4 Barbatos plus extras that you had to buy in a separate parts kit is pretty cool IMHO.

That image of Sound Euphnoium girls totally deceived me. I thought this guide was going to recommend gifting the overpriced, sub-only BD/DVD combos for season 1 from Ponycan USA, the worst anime publisher ever. Burn in hell PCUSA.

On the actual recommended products, there are several good shows. Speaking of KyoAni shows, I would recommend Hyouka, Amagi Brilliant Park and the complete, standard BD collection of season 1 and 2 of Chuunibyou.

I need to order Utena...I was waiting to see some photos of the packaging. I haven't searched around to see if any are available.

EDIT: wow the picture just loaded very nice

BTW totally getting Bandit Flower. Thunderbolt has some of the most gorgeous animation I've seen in a long long time. I really dislike how the 4K UHD versions come naked. As much as I like 4K I can't pass on the bonus materials.

To be fair it's only season 2 that gets a bad rap. Season 1 is still considered a good adaption.

So is there a release cut-off date for products to be included in the guide? I ask because one of the BD sets in the list looked like a good idea for someone I know. Unfortunately, the release date is probably too far into December to receive on time, unless maybe I were to pay for ridiculous expedited shipping. There are already a few things I pre-ordered that are expected later because the release dates are in mid-December.

Not a collector's box, but if I had a friend who liked (or I thought would like) Angel Beats!, I would get them the Sentai release of that right now, since the license has expired and Aniplex is clawing it back. I bought a copy for a friend just last year because I knew the license was expiring.

That said, even though Sentai's big blowout "going away" sale was just a few weeks ago, when I checked a few hours ago, Right Stuf only had the DVD, Amazon only listed resellers, and it was gone from Sentai's shop entirely. You could gift a digital copy from iTunes, I guess. Still, all the more urgency to get it while you can, if you have someone who "thinks [they're] edgy and likes crying" (source) on your list.

I try to only include items that will be released before Christmas. If you pre-order the item, at least in my experience, it will arrive by (or sometimes a little earlier than) street date as opposed to being shipped ON street date, if that makes sense.

I already own the Ranma 1/2 and Record of Lodoss War sets, and have no reservations at all recommending either set. The video on the Lodoss OVAs is stunning for 25+ year old anime, and the Chronicles TV (DVD only) is a big improvement over any previous release.

Also, Shin Godzilla is an absolute blast, IMHO the best Godzilla picture since the original. And like the original, it's a political screed as much as a kaiju epic, and for me at least, it worked. Bonus points for seeing how many times Anno rips himself off. Lastly, this is arguably the most hideous and tortured Godzilla yet, a creature whose very existence must be agony.

No. Nooooo. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That Speed Racer collector's set better not be what they are solely selling Mach Go Go in. Please tell me that we are going to get a standalone set for the Japanese version. Because otherwise........ Fffff-Bell clangs. Ned Flanders: That's the loudest piece of profanity I've ever heard.

The license is announced over 2 years ago; We've waited through that, through Speed Racer being released first, and now we FINALLY get Mach Go Go Go but it's contained within a set where you are required to buy the 2 other versions?

If this is the case, Funimation, why? Do you think no one really wants it? If you think all of 100 people are going to buy it, why not do a Discotek and put the episodes on a standalone SD-Blu-ray? 1/3 of this collection comes out to $100 anyway.

And I never would have known this if it weren't for the ANN gift guide. What has this set been called everywhere I've heard of it or seen it? " The SPEED RACER Collector's Set". I gave it a wide berth because I didn't want to re-buy Speed Racer and was waiting for Mach Go Go Go!

Siggggggggghhhhhhhh. God bless that original Pokemon set. It has no Japanese and I'm still excited for it; It's helping the sting of this.

P.S. If a Mach Go Go Go set is later released, I will be first in line to buy it with a smile on my face. If it was always planned, my sincere apologies.

This second release of Haikyu!! has the added bonus of having an English dub in case anyone was wondering. Don't know why they didn't mention that. That was the whole point of the re-release as the first one was sub only.

Haha those of us who pre-ordered the Haikyu!! Collector's Edition are still waiting cause of a delay, while those who bought the standard version already got theirs. I'm hoping mine gets here this weekend. I've waited/fought for that dub for 2 years!

Also can't wait for Sailor Moon Season 3!

I'm glad that I saved the money... Utena, Gundam Wing and Mob Psycho will be mine. And already got JoJo series 1 and Gurren Lagann back in August.

I think you're going to be disappointed...

People that are Speed fans want the dub. The dub along with the racing action is what made the show iconic. The Japanese part is incidental whether people here want to acknowledge that or not. I mean it's a racing show for goodness sake! Laughing
I've seen bits and pieces of the Japanese version and frankly it wasn't all that different. There wasn't as much to edit out as people think and I'm pretty sure (going by the subs I saw) that the stories weren't altered all that much.

I agree, though, this is a CRUMMY way to do it but it's also possible Tatsunoko forced Funimation through the license agreement to release the series this way. If that's the case, they really need to rethink the negotiations and NOT do this again but sometimes they can't do a darn thing and the series holder won't budge.
There were some really weird past releases of shows where the release pattern was mandated by show owners (Gantz, for instance, and Record of Lodoss War more recently).

Still, $300 for a 50-year-old series is too rich for me...
... and the 1997 remake really isn't that good, either.

I might have gotten the set, too, but again, the pricepoint was ridiculous, I don't need Speed's face staring at me and taking up HUGE space on my shelf, and I sure as hell don't need the 1997 series which was not-so-good. That was par the course for Tatsunoko in the 1990s. They did remakes/reboots of a few of their most popular shows (Casshan, Gatchaman, and Mach Go Go) and none of them were very good. The remakes are pretty much forgotten and anybody with sense (good taste) would tell you to get the original shows and watch those instead.
