This includes 1.95 million units in Japan, 3.11 million units in the Americas, and 2.56 units in other regions.

I guess people in Europe and Australia really aren't into the Switch if only 2..56 were sold. How do you buy .56 of a Switch anyways, did they only want one joycon?

Yes, I am trolling the obvious omission. No, I'm not thick enough to think only 2.5 Switch's were sold in that region!

Overseas sales seem to be more than japan. Does Japan not like the Switch, or is the market dominated by other systems too much to make a dent in it?

127 million people in Japan, 1 billion people in the Americas

Seems pretty good to me!

Not to ruin the party, but isn't that kind of bad? I mean I know it only came out in March, but this thing has been literally everywhere, especially this week with Mario Odyssey. Whatever the hell is going on with Nintendo's supply, they need to fix it NOW.

They pretty much sold more than half the number of units of the Wii U's entire lifespan so I'd say that's pretty damn good all things considered. As for the supply issues, they are aware of them according to this bit from the Wall Street Journal:

Quote:
Since its introduction in March 2017, the Switch has been hard to find on store shelves. Chief Executive Tatsumi Kimishima apologized for the situation, saying the company’s forecast was too cautious. He said Nintendo would make sure the item was well-stocked for the year-end holiday shopping season.

“Thanks to our component suppliers, who even opened up new production lines for the Switch, our ability to ship the console has improved drastically,” he said.

Not even close; the PS4 sold at the same rate in its first seven months and that was easier to get than a Switch. Heck, Odyssey just cracked 2 million in three days so clearly Nintendo has a hot product. And to think we're not even to the holiday season yet

I know some people hate Nintendo for some reason but I'm not sure why some people are still convinced the Switch is a failure when by all accounts it seems to be a big hit especially now with the new Mario out.

when you put it next to its competition, the numbers don't look so great. globally the PS4 has sold over 60 million units. even the xone has sold over 30mn and it was a failure in japan.

highly reviewed games aren't enough to save a console - only sales matter.

Nintendo gets deserved flak for its draconian policy on fanworks and its cold attitude towards its most dedicated fans. just a lot of bad PR over the years that's starting to compound on itself. they do make great games.. but that's about all they are good at.

You're kidding right? Globally PS4 has sold 60 million units after 4 years. Why are you comparing Switch sales with PS4? Why not compare how much they sold in their first years instead? Cold attitude towards fans? When? Also except the Wii U Nintendo had no other failures in recent years. The Wii, the DS, the 3DS all sold very well. I will admit they are really strict when it comes to fanworks though.

Great numbers for the switch! At this rate they'll surpass the WiiU entire life span in less then a year. I think they can call this a huge success.

the PS4 sold just over 15 million units in its first year with consistent growth every following year.

the Wii U was indeed a failure. it's difficult to bounce back from them. look at Sega in 1999 with the Dreamcast - an excellent console with an impressive line-up and a solid launch. but in the end it put Sega out of the hardware business because of the sour taste the Saturn left in people's mouths.

what does it tell you when Switch sales numbers dip below the PS4 - a console that as you said is 4 years old? it's never catching up. Nintendo can't release a "Super Mario Odyssey" every 6 months to prop up hardware sales.

that being said, the Switch will easily outsell the Wii U, but don't hold your breath for it to out-do any of its other predecessors in sales.

Err, outselling the Gamecube and N64 isn't really that unlikely.

These are sales figures as of September 30th (27 days before Super Mario Odyssey).

I've said many times on this forum that Nintendo needed to do away with their home console product and focus entirely on their portable product with an option to play it on a big screen. There's no surprise that the Switch has been a tremendous success. Nintendo has always dominated the portable market.

It's fantastic that both Nintendo and Sony raised their projections for the current fiscal year. The home console/portable video game industry remains stalwart as ever.

Not unlikely at least in the Gamecube's case. I think the days of the Wii-era dominance are long gone, though. The Switch will play 2nd fiddle to Sony. Luckily the DS still sells like hotcakes , it's no wonder they've come out with a ridiculous amount of revisions.
