I don't find it one bit ironic that the toy sales are quite possibly what saved the new Power Rangers movie. Since that is the main premise of the tv show.

How coincidental that ScreenRant story came out the same week of the home video launch.
Anyone ever hear of a live action film getting a sequel because of toy sales? I can't think of any. Cars was allegedly made into a trilogy with spinoffs because of its toy success, but we're talking like billions in merch revenue and none of those films did as poorly as Power Rangers anyway. Even Planes 2, the lowest grossing film in the franchise, pulled in 3x its budget. I just don't see the math really working out. One of the bigger complaints from the first film was the lack of action sequences. That was with a $100 million budget. If the sequel is getting funded because of toy sales, it's going to have to sell toys. That means more fight scenes and a higher budget. Not much wiggle room until you hit the total the first film grossed.

Um... the subject of race is never brought up, there's only one comment on a character's (albeit obvious) autism, and it's subtly implied one of them might be a lesbian. That's... it. What forced diversity are you even talking about? |

I'm definitely hoping for a sequel. They did such a good job developing the cast and I want to see more from them.

I would like a sequel too, the first movie was surprisingly fun as someone who was a fan as a tot. With the characters kind of developed already, I would be interested to see where they could take it.

Green Ranger arc would most likely be the next film, Tommy being manipulated by Rita and he can try to take out the Rangers on two levels, with bullying, deceit, manipulation, etc. while as Tommy and by defeating the Rangers in their first fight against him as Green Ranger and making them question their fighting abilities. I would advise them to be careful to not over-focus on Tommy as the show did for a while, particularly since this movie's group of characters really played off each other well so I'd want to keep the focus even once Tommy joins the team rather than making it the Tommy Show. They had initially said they had plans for six movies altogether. It seems unlikely we will get that many now but I could see it happening this way: we have our first movie, 2 does Green Ranger arc, 3 brings in Lord Zedd and Thunder Zords, 4 does the Ninja Ranger arc, 5 does Zeo, and 6 does In Space. Yes, I skipped Turbo, and while I think that season did have a few good qualities I'm sure I'm not alone when I say it's the weakest of the Zordon era of the franchise. That might seem like too much story for each individual movie with those last three, but keep in mind this is under the assumption they can keep most of, if not all of, the original actors in the movie series since the show often switched out some, if not all, of its cast every season so not having to develop so many characters every movie would definitely make it easier to do a whole season in one movie potentially. |

Making a sequel due to toy sales would literally be the DUMBEST move anyone could make for this. This movie was clearly not targeted to (not saying "not watched by", but "targeted to") children, and I can't imagine there's enough man-children that would make a sequel profitable for toy reasons. If you want to make a Power Rangers movie to sell toys, then make a Power Rangers movie that's scripted and planned for THAT reason, rather than trying to justify your angsty-teen action franchise on the basis of action figures that were bought by parents who probably thought they were from the (still running) TV show.

Lionsgate didn't want to "sell toys", they wanted a New Studio Teen Franchise now that "Hunger Games" had wrapped up. That's why they spent so much darn story time on our heroes' angsty-conflicted young-adult lives. Those who went to see the movie or bought the toys only went to relive Pop-Culture or...buy the 90's toys. The idea of doing a sequel is entirely the core fans' and LG's, not anyone else's, to the point that we may hear a Kickstarter campaign announced any minute, like the Veronica Mars movie.
And yes, even those said "But it's got such a loyal nostalgic cult-followng on VIDEO!" |

not toy sales no, but there have been movies/tv series that got sequels/seasons due to dvd sales: Austin Powers, Family Guy, Futurama...so yeah, anything is possible. And I wouldn't mind a PR2; it'll go nicely with Pacific Rim 2. They can be part of a shared universe...hur...hur...

The first film was almost purely an origin story, so it pretty much needs a sequel to work. It was a very good film though, but it should've been written more like a standalone feature. It might've been more memorable that way, and if it flopped, we'd still have a complete story to watch.

The actress who plays the pink ranger in this movie just got casted as Jasmine in the live action Aladdin remake.
What are they going to do? Say she went to a peace conference?

I think it's only a matter of time before Lionsgate and Saban may have to forgo their idea of their six-movie are of Power Rangers and settle for two films or maybe even a trilogy instead...
