Then, Bowser will stick one of these onto the Postmaster Toad himself, who will then be folded up and sent to Mario's house with a threat written on him.

Ah, philately. Quite possibly the original otaku hobby, characterised as it is by limited-edition goods produced with niche markets in mind.

Old school designs, you don't see Mario and crew like that at all these days.

This style actually DOES show up from time to time in promotional art and in art for re-releases of 8-bit and 16-bit Mario games. I was pretty amused when I got a Club Nintendo pouch and it came with a postcard-sized thank you note with artwork of the major Mario characters in this style, including newer characters like Bowser Jr. and Rosalina.
Ever since then, I've seen this style come up often enough that I'm sure there is someone at Nintendo always on hand to draw Mario stuff like this.

Good, I was actually not expecting someone to get it. (I also want to believe that's Parakarry in the upper middle, but I know it isn't.)

Not only that, they've used that round portrait of Peach (at the bottom right) at least once before, as her character select portrait in Super Mario 3D World. The only difference is the color of the background.

Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot about Super Mario 3D World using this style here and there. That was pretty unexpected, so I'm surprised at myself for forgetting about it.

Paper Mario: Color Splash at least gets some credit for having a memorable opening scene. : )

The correct term is "postmark" or "cancellation", not "processing stamp".
