Well, I guess that's good news, but there's something I'm curious about...
From what I know, the Yakuza managed to keep the post WWII Japan in a stable condition due to their smuggling of truck loads of food, and by purchasing millions in state-debt, and from what I heard once, they had a vast majority of the country's debt in their hands, making them almost untouchable. How did this turn into what we have nowadays? Did the groups from back then reform and create honest to good companies? Did they dissolve? Was the state-debt paid in full? Did it change hands? I believe Japans debt is still in the hands of its citizens, isn't it?

Welp, let's see if someone can answer my questions. Keep in mind this is stuff I heard from other people and I haven't really studied the subject, so feel free to correct the above.

Proof that making something illegal just makes the mafia profit from it.

Actually ... I wouldn't call "uncensored porn" something UNPLEASANT ... Oh well ... To each their own I guess Rolling Eyes

"Tampopo" director Juzo Itami is thought to have run afoul of the Yakuza (a suspicious, quote, "suicide" off a building), after satirizing common Yakuza practices in modern late-80's Tokyo--
Particularly "Minbo", where he satirized, and educated police and merchants on a solution to, the common low-level shakedown practice of causing disturbances in businesses that the owners want to keep quiet, and then violently bullying the owners into refunds. (Their version of the "protection racket".)

The difference, though, is that the Japanese court system supposedly grinds slower and more expensive than the US's, and while US mob bosses have their own lawyers and buy off police and judges if things go to court, Japanese bosses prefer to avoid letting things hit the public fan if possible.

It is really quite a fascinating state of affairs for the unobstructed depiction of genitalia to be the preserve of organised criminals, rather than an interested public at large.

there were recetnly some changes in pachinko legislation, which also hit yakuza pretty harshly, haivng some companies dropping or giving lesse mphasis ot heir pachinko business, snk is a "well known" case of being mostly funded by yakuza money then getting chiense investors on board partialyl ebcause fo the law changes.

The censorship laws in Japan are just pointless and stupid, especially since they find these weird loopholes anyway. You can't show penetration or genitalia, but shoving 12 eels up a girl's butt? That's a-OK.

It's actually kinda hilarious.

While I also laughed over the horrors of "uncensored porn," I also feel obligated to ruin everyone's fun by pointing out that these probably aren't just unedited versions of commercial porn but rather more related with the "human trafficking" part. :/

So, is that one way some people in Japan can get their hands on some uncensored hentai? I truly pity them.

It's ironic because it was the American occupation force that influenced them towards this censorship. Look up the history of Article 175 of Japan's Criminal's Code.

And I guess the state of porn there is more of a hot topic than the actual Yakuza around these parts.

Well very few of us have probably ever seen or met a real live Yakuza, while probably just about all of us have looked at porn at some point in our lives.

Changing social attitudes have probably contributed to the decline in Yakuza membership too. I remember hearing that at one time something like 70-75% of Yakuza members were estimated to come from the ranks of the Burakumin, at a time when there was still widespread discrimination against people from that social class. The Yakuza was one of the very few places that had no prejudices about hiring them. There's still some lingering discrimination against Buraku, especially in western Japan, but it's a lot less than it used to be, and much easier nowadays for them to find legal forms of employment.

If I correctly recall, the episodes of the Sonozaki Sisters in Higurashi: When We Cry featured some aspects that are somewhat Yakuza-related...

Edit: Awesome! 6000 posts! I seem to be getting further into the mountain path...

Could be both, actually. There have been reports of some pretty dodgy tactics used to get and keep young women in the commercial porn industry.

It's been said that some of Japan's casino areas were under total rule of the Yakuza in the past...Have they lost any of there influence their as a result of the JNPA's fight against them?
