For a second I thought the cross dresser was the smaller lady, since traps tend to be small, but to my surprise it seems the taller one is the man.

I'm not entirely sure if I should be put off by the story's setup.

The girl, Shizuka's, appearance is too childlike. The guy, Ryō, while I don't care that he's a cross dresser, doesn't need oversized fake breasts. He's also gotta be able to take the wig off to remind us that he is a man, otherwise it just seem like we're watching some Yuri shit.

Stuff like this makes me want to question Japan's opinion of yuri and lesbianism.

At least there are a decent number of yuri titles to choose from nowadays. If that title came out like say at least 15 years ago, it would have been a really bothersome bait-and-switch.

The whole point of this stuff is they don't look like a guy. Until the salami appears, that is. Wink

Wonder if any company will get this, or if they'd be too scared of the backlash.

Due to relative population sizes, there's more yuri aimed at heterosexual guys than stuff aimed at lesbians, just like there's more yaoi targeted at heterosexual girls than stuff (bara, or whatever it's called these days) at gay men. The stuff aimed at heterosexuals tends to have a lot more emphasis on the transgressive nature of the relationship violating a taboo (Japan, like everywhere else in Asia, doesn't have gay marriage, though Taiwan is getting very close), and often includes other transgressive and/or unhealthy aspects (same reason why incest taboo stuff is popular). Somewhat weirdly, up until a few years ago there were lots of fujoshi who separated fantasy from reality to an extent that they loved BL but were homophobic in real life. Then again, there are no doubt American men who enjoy a little "lesbian" porn but don't like real life lesbians.

This show, like its partner, is quite clearly aimed at heterosexual women. (There are heterosexual crossdressers in real life, among many many other ways that people express themselves.)

One of the things about Yuri on Ice! is that it's a nice ice skating rom com (which is practically a genre, consider the The Cutting Edge series of movies) where the lead couple happens to be gay, but it doesn't treat the relationship as exciting because it's taboo, just exciting for all the reasons that any romantic relationship is exciting. I only found the series to be a good solid rom com worth watching but not my all time favorite or even a great show, but it's certainly understandable why people looking for representation would enjoy it, and it's heartening to see something that treats gay relationships as normal be so successful.

Their last anime (Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni...) was not available outside Japan, so its safe to say that this will also not be available overseas.

Crap, another oversexualized gender bent male-to-female lead or co-lead character that's totally not what I'm looking for in a gender bender anime. At least he/she's older and more maturely-drawn than the standard barely-a-boy-in-the-first-place "trap"-style character usually found in these things.

Okay, I'm not a mod, so it's not my place to police the forums, but considering THREE different people have already done this in the thread so far, I'm gonna go ahead and remind you all that use of the term "trap" to refer to characters/people is considered offensive and banned on these boards.

And if by some chance you didn't know that, now you do. Consider this a PSA.

Regarding the anime in question, I have... issues. It seems like the premise has the potential to be really uncomfortable if not downright offensive if pulled of badly, and I'm not convinced it will be pulled off well.

Using officially recogized terms is offensive? Criminey. I guess I see why they choose not to release it overseas now.

I suggest people read this post from Jacob Chapman:

Hey guys!

Since there seems to be some confusion about it, here's why "trap" is a really crappy word and people are giving you stink-eye for tossing it around like it's hilarious. As if saying "trap" is just inherently funny or necessary to say over and over again, and adding any additional context for the label makes it any better.

First of all, "trap" originated on 4chan, from ye olde Star Wars Ackbar scene. The fact that it originated on 4chan might be enough of a red flag for some of you, but in case it's not for most of you, here's a very simple plain english breakdown for why women and LGBT folk see that word (and usually the context it's used in by the person who used it) and feel uncomfortable. This is specifically why it's a slur.

Calling a person a "trap" because they're a biological man in women's clothing is hurtful because by the word's very plain definition, you are reducing that person to a position of "sexual object if woman, mistake/problem for me if not." The implication is that by looking like an attractive woman, (it is only ever used for men who "pass," you may notice, no one ever uses "trap" for a clearly masculine man in a dress,) they are automatically a sexual option for you, that is their purpose, and if there's a dick under that skirt, you've been "tricked" and that's their fault. It's used as the punchline for a joke, but by cosplaying as a woman, in NO WAY did this guy invite your sexual advances or judgment, whether he's transgender or identifies as a man and just enjoys wearing women's clothing. It's especially not funny considering that the number of transwomen or drag performers that have been harassed or murdered because men thought they were women and decided to be violent when they discovered they weren't is really really depressingly high.

Either way, the word is gross, unfunny, punching down, and unkind not only to the man in women's clothing, but also betrays a diminishing attitude toward women: If a woman is pretty, that means she exists to be sexualized by you. If she's secretly a man, that's apparently both your business and your problem. That's what "trap" means, all of that in one crappy little syllable. It's hurtful and shitty. It won't be tolerated here. Hopefully, you can see where we're coming from. If not, you can take it somewhere else.
