Ten years ago, I was all over MS Igloo, but these days I'm finding it extremely difficult to care about Gundam Thunderbolt, which is by all accounts a better OVA series. I hope that doesn't mean that I've reached the point where I'm no longer interested in new shows about the One Year War, because that would be a real shame.

Now that we're into the second series, how are you enjoying the emphasis on combat and the soundtrack choices?
While I was quite entranced by all the brutality and stylisation early on, the lack of change in themes and narrative balance has really dampened my enthusiasm about the whole project. It seems as if each episode is little more than a canvas for yet another jazz-fight.

I'd like the combat a lot more if the mobile suit designs didn't seem to get goofier and goofier (at least to me) as the show goes on. The show's designer(s) sure like to stick stuff on their mobile suits.

I'd actually say the series is my favorite Gundam, though maybe not the best Gundam. You can say the themes don't change but if anything its core theme is (one of) Gundam's as a whole, which I think should not change, which is the brutality and spectacle of war and the moral greyness of all sides holistically if not individually. There are certainly better Gundams in terms of world building and plot, but that is not what I watch this OVA series for, but rather the demonstration of all facets of that one theme, set to spectacular mecha battles and jazz. Admittedly the song title mentioned in the most recent episode does sum up the show well: Groovy Duel.

That's pretty much how it always was. Keep in mind each episode is 3-5 min shorter than the average TV episode.

Granted this wasn't much of a problem in the 1st season because it was pretty much a OYW side story and thus didn't need to provide info on the conflict and the factions involved since its already assume you know about it. Also S1 was pretty faithful to the manga.

With season 2 that's not the case. The conflict in S2 is a new conflict and so far the anime hasn't given us much info on the new faction (South Sea Alliance) fighting the Federation. There's actually a significant amount of manga scenes omitted from the first two episodes.

While I still find the action and music to be appealing its too bad that sunrise seems to be cutting out more manga material in S2. At least the manga is being released in the US so you can always check that out if you want to see how it compares to the anime.
