Every time Tomino speaks about the modern anime industry, I'm reminded of the "Old Man Yells at Cloud" image from the Simpsons.
Don't get me wrong, the man created one of the most influential anime of all time, one that's had a massive impact on me personally (note the screen name). But he's always been a grumpy curmudgeon with strong opinions.

Given the latter's critical reception, I could only wonder whether Tomino was referring to Your Name or Reconguista in G at this point...

Oh come now, Your Name is shiny, new, and extremely successful so that would obviously be the one isn't being nice to even if the other work in question wasn't his own.

FFS, what is with the posters in this thread? Tomino is being perfectly measured and wise here and you're all dismissing his views outright without any real refutation. Is a little honest examination too much for hugbox-grasping youth now?
The man has earned the right to be "curmudgeonly", if you disagree with what he says, attack his words and not his character.

Yeah, but you can tell Tomino's quite bitter that G-Reco wasn't liked.

At least he isn't twisting people's words to fit their agenda.
He wasn't even being grumpy here. He just stated the obvious. First movie does well? Sequel. No? No sequel.

But it was?
The West = / = Japan.
Outside of Otaking's trolling and ANN's hilarious article, the ratings and sales were relatively fine, especially considering the time slot it was in. Hell, I'm pretty sure sure it did better than IBO in overall viewership numbers as well iirc.

More people in the industry should say no to CG. CG is a risk especially full CG and can ruin an anime if it's bad.

Fanart is a good way to judge popularity/success and you barely see any G-reco art, while IBO has truckloads of it.

Thats not at all what I said.
This is the guy who hated Attack on Titan, and blamed people for not having Reco-G be successful.
I never mentioned anything about the sequel comment. And no, I'm not going against his character, his opinions as of late alone are enough for me to say he i the way he is.

BD/DVD sales averaged 9,012 per video volume, which happens to be only around 900 less per volume than the first half of IBO.

I'm not really a supporter but his statement "Our ability to think about things in a 'real' way is deteriorating." is not untrue from a writing perspective. Most anime don't eve try to keep any a single of their attributes grounded when it comes to characters.
But he's not really one to talk since G-Wrecko was a huge mess with some very badly written characters.
