The return of the character will be the first part of a series of commemorations for the Macross franchise's 35th anniversary this year.

Sounds like bandaid of them covering that there was issues with Delta, this is all they have to put out for the anniversary. I know Delta's music was popular in Japan, but Nome had better material.

I don't like direction Macross in general has turned into franchise wise. Music Scifi Drama. Sad

I actually have to agree that this might be a band-aid.
I also really disliked Delta.. so much to the point that I only made it to 7 episodes before abandoning it.

Frontier also had some issues.. it took me a few episodes before I started liking it.
As a more "old skool" macross fan it does seem as if the series is wandering in the wrong direction.

I didn't watch Delta so i can't comments on it, though the character design is not my cup of tea. I still see Mikamoto's design as the superior ones for Macross.

As for Frontier, well the series was not bad at all but didn't end in a proper way IMHO as that i felt it was kinda rushed.

The 1st Movie was decent but the 2nd was something to forget. I hope whatever they make is something that will redeem the 2nd movie.

I have to agree with Delta, I didn't like it at all, so I'm glad that Sheryl is the one who's coming back (but I wish Fire Bomber would be back too. 7 it's not the best serie in the saga, but I love their music a lot).

I don't see how they need to redeem the second movie. It was very popular and well liked. I don't see why people get hung up on the movies in the first place. If you dislike them, just take the ending of the tv series as canon?

It's not like the second movie is the 'true end'. Neither the tv series nor the movies are more canon than the other. Kawamori's gone on record in saying that no version of Macross counts as more canon than another.

As I'm a fan of the love triangle not being resolved (what can I say, my OTP is Sheryl/Ranka), I prefer the tv series end. I also prefer the general tone of it. But I do just adore the pure spectacle of the movies, and they have some fantastic moments.

Also spoiler[while I know that Kawamori meant for the ending to imply that Sheryl was waking up and even added a joint concert between Sheryl and Ranka onto the blu-ray release in the credits that was supposed to be post-movie to solidify that, enough people don't know that and think her fate's up in the air that it's a little frustrating. I don't really blame those fans, but yeah it's irritating to see the misunderstanding.]

Also I liked Delta (even if yes, it wasn't as good as MF), and I don't think this is them necessarily trying to 'make up for it'. They've been marketing Macross F consistently for the past eight years and making merchandise for it, and literally just seemed to have stopped for a breather while Delta was airing (I'm a figure collector, and this series seems to get two Ichiban Kuji events a year, I swear. It's great, but the amount of Sheryl figures I've collected because of it is intense). Within a month of it ending, they'd already announced new Sheryl and Ranka figures though. If they're doing other stuff for Macross's 35th after all, this is just the first in line of multiple projects.

Anyway, May'n is incredible and I can't wait to see what this is!

I don't think this is band-aid per se. Frontier is just very popular so why not continue cashing in on it.

I... would even argue that the second movie has been the high point of Macross, along with Plus, but for a different reason. Putting aside shipping (be it Ranka or Sheryl, the end of Movie 2 was awesome imho) the movies trimmed the fat, had better characterization for both Alto and Ranka and just look fabulous. Those who haven't seen the show might be a bit lost in the plot though.

I would have to agree. The ending of movie 2 was a big improvement from the happily ever after dance of the series. That just seemed too forced given the fight for their lives against galactic peril. I was also happy with the girl that got picked, but considering the ending that doesn't really improve my opinion of it. They obviously did trim a lot for the movies so I think you're probably right about viewing them on their own.

Wait, are you saying you ship Sheryl with Ranka or you ship Alto with both of them at once?

I don't really see how that wasn't clear. spoiler[Pretty sure the movie specifically said they were putting her in cold sleep while they finished the cure.]

well, consider me deflated. Frontier is pretty decisively my least favorite entry in the series, and I was never wild about its music either. If the anniversary project is just more Frontier stuff, I'll be pretty bummed, but I'm also not wild about it being a big nostalgia-mining franchise entry. I mean, does anyone else remember how Digimon Young Hunters turned out?

Out of all the Macross series, Frontier was my personal favorite. I really love May'n and her singing.

That's fine, I guess (since music was the only thing Frontier had going for it), but I'd rather hear Sharon Apple's return (albeit, they'd have to keep her in check).

Can't take Delta seriously when the villains is a wind addict, and can sense or predict everything that will happen because the wind told them lol.

No, when the franchise started and when it go as far as Macross Plus it was Scifi Drama Music.. It always has. Macross 7 changes it just they were doing something different, Frontier became hybrid Scifi Music Drama

My point was that the franchise didn't need relay on Music so heavily that it messed up the story line or reality. This was space soup opera. Now it's confused. I understand they need make money off it, Macross early days was toys, models, and music was new thing. Now it's almost all music and maybe video games which is just promoting the franchise.

Music is now all-or-nothing with touch of mecha action which is drastic change. They Idol groups, the enemy mecha team was like something out of anime called Free. Very odd method to reach out beyond the JP Fanbase of Macross.
