I kinda don't get all the waves this film is making.

I watched it and still enjoyed it, but it wasn't THAT great. The animation is gorgeous, and the characters are rather likable sure, but it's not impeccable.

Probably the biggest problem is the sometimes jarring tonal shifts throughout. The third act in particular feeling like almost a completely different movie. It doesn't flow as well as you'd hope.

I'm not saying it doesn't deserve any praise because it rightfully does, but people have been hyping this film like it's the new golden standard of animation and I don't get it.It really isn't, and probably does garner the term overrated.

Watching everyone lose their s^&* over this movie has been pretty hilarious. Especially the butthurt Ghilbli fans thinking their precious Spirited Away is getting tossed to the side to make way for the new kid on the block.

I came here looking for the "i don't don't get it" comment...looks like i found it.

And people aren't "hyping" it. They just go see the movie and the $$$$ piles up. It just so happens that most of them really liked the movie.

The film REALLY resonates with anyone who has had a relationship or connection with someone like Taki and Mitsuha do. I do and god I bloody love this film. I can see why people won't get the film, but considering how much Japan is riddled with love and romantic culture, it's not hard to see why this film works for them so much. For the western world the film is a cultural difference that some viewers either won't get or can't relate to for one reason or another. These are the people that will commonly call this film overrated.

Also this film had the balls to keep it's entire 2nd and 3rd acts a secret, in today's world of spoiling a film with trailers and interviews this was freaking amazing. Plus did you see this film in theater or just the awful rip floating around the internet? Cause this is one such film that is enhanced by the cinematic experience.

I mean, your comment's kind of pretentious and condescending too. I don't know if I'd call Ghibli fans butthurt. I follow a big FB page and most of them said they were cool with it and they liked the movie.
