At the moment, the pacing does feel but somehow, I think this show will get much better once we understand the characters more. This series has potential to be a dark horse of the season. I've only read a few chapters of the manga and it's been fairly interesting.
Also one of my favorite OP songs this season.

I agree that it's slow, but i for one am fairly content with watching biseinen smoke or drink tea and eat cake while waiting for the plot to be set in motion.
One thing confused me, though: when Jean and Nino were out drinking, it was mentioned that they've known each other for fifteen years, but later Nino declares that Jean never once noticed him watching in thirty years. So are we to believe that he's basically been observing Jean since kindergarten or was there some kind of translation error?

I though it was decent but nothing great. I mean for one they clearly don't know how to do good exposition which is a shame considering its exposition heavy... At the same time we're pretty light on actual information, so it's a monarchy, but is there an elected element? What about the 5 chief, what exactly are there power? Is the king just ceremonial? How did the unification happens? Are there other countries out there?
But the pace is relaxing and the artwork is distinct enough to keep me entertained.
I'm guessing the story will eventually be about how just the rumor of a coup are enough to start a coup in themselves or something like that. Jean being setup was revealed a bit too early for my taste, I don't really care bout him, so him being setup is not something I particularly care about.

I think I heard juugo and sanjuu, so yeah. Maybe "observing" is too mild a word?
This is really sloooooow, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I like its sense of humor. That giant food! And the range of heights in that single shot! Gives "super size me" a whole new meaning...

I know this is a weird thing to bring up, but I really like the backgrounds, I know they are not perfect, static characters in them and some are hardly finished. But I do like seeing a show with hand-painted backgrounds(either that or someone has great Photoshop skills)

I am slightly disappointed on how this show decided to tackle the politic side of it. For one part, I'm okay with expositionary dialogue in this, and I would've preferred if the branches and stuff of ACCA was explained like they explained how the country was born to some kids, that was much more easier to understand than the "As you know" introductory dialogue to the characters that literally know what the guy is exposing about.
But on the other hand, the way they tackle politics is very cookie-cutter. Not only is it a little ambiguous on what political system they currently are other than just "stable", constitutionary monarchy? Parlamentary monarchy? I don't know, and I don't really feel this conflict of a "possible coup d'etat", because other than some shady guys, I don't even have any idea about the ideology of those in power and those who would like to do a coup d'etat, it's all just pinned on Jean, who is mostly apathetic about his job and as righteous as he is, he hasn't been very vocal about what he thinks of the system and its failures.
So it's walking on a thin line for me; I do really like the mood, the music and the whole aesthetic of it though, so I can keep giving it a chance.

A thought that occurred to me was that there might be some memory manipulation going on, but ACCA doesn't seem to have the tone for any scifi shenanigans (in fact, its setting seems so retro to me I'm surprised when characters use computers and smart phones). So I guess we'll just have to wonder why Nino was spying on Jean since elementary school...

Loved the huge strawberry! It was as big as a cantaloupe! Is that what tourists think of American restaurants the first time they eat here?

I'm glad the tax rate on cigarettes is high in ACCA. That means it's almost unaffordable, people are least likely to get lung cancer, and no one has to worry about smelling smoke while walking down the street.
If such a thing would come true, I'd wish for all forms of smoking products to be destroyed.

It's also in the Spanish subs, so a) you're right and Nino knows him from a lot of time or b) these translators are translating directly from the English subs.
I actually love this slow pacing ACCA gives to the series. It gives a lot of time developing its setting and its whole cast, and it:'s doing it very well. Lots of little details in the character animation, too! I particularly liked when Jean and the chubby inspector talk to the tall guy during the second episode: they slowly raised their heads and then touched their necks as a sign of pain for doing that. It's very subtle comedy and I really liked it. And those Studio Pablo's backgrounds and the great jazzy music are great complements!
So far, it's my second favorite show after demi-chan.

My biggest critique of the first episode was just how lazy Jean was to leave behind his lighter, not just at work but also at the tea shop. Luckily this episode quickly showed that this was a part of Jean's plan to confront Mushroom Head. Overall, I'm enjoying this one. Wish that it was as Orewellian as the plot synopsis I read of it made me think it'd be, but it's pretty chill and easy for me to watch.

So I guess I'm the only one thinking Jean is actually planning a coup with his catalog stuff as a disguise, then?

^ No He actually looks fishier than the Groshular and seems kike the kind of guy who knows how to lie to people.
And this guy Nino seems to work for everyone! I wouldn't even be surprised if he's working with the actual plotters while helping Groshular framing Jean, while saving Jean's ass from everyone else, while hitting on Jean's sister, while working as a journalist.

Quote: | All the while, I'm thinking what an attractive target this assembly of the 13 district chiefs, members of congress, ACCA's branch chiefs, the Five Chief Executive Officers and the royal family all in one place would make |
You weren't the only one! I kept expecting dinners to be poisoned, drinks to be laced with poison, sweets intended for the king to be poisoned... I really was surprised that the king made it through the episode alive after neglecting to abdicate. As coups go, this is a pretty laid back one.

I'm wondering if he is a secret Heir (possibly to protect him from assassination) which would make him the real next in line. He is a dead ringer for the Crown Prince. Crow I assume is working for the Privy secretary keeping tabs on him and manoeuvring him in to a position to take the throne when the King dies.
The other thing that struck me was everyone was assuming a coup would come from the bottom up when it could as easily come from someone close to power.

I'm starting to get slightly annoyed with Lotta since the story seems to build her up as classic damsel in distress material who is likely to be used by anyone and their mother. How old is she supposed to be anyhow?
That aside, wouldn't smokers be the most likely to state a coup in that world? There certainly doesn't seem to be a lack of cake...
