I took a class at Seika. It's a nice school.

Uh, in other words, isn't this like just a variation of an illustration program? O_o They make it seem so special when it doesn't sound any different. |

I dunno anything about the department, but there's a difference between illustration and comics, although they involve a lot of the same skills... I'd imagine the manga department will focus on the tasks involved in telling stories throguh a series of pictures, as well as the practical aspects of producing weekly material (There's an interview on the DVD that comes with that Taschen Manga book in which a manga artist says that if you wanna do manga, you have to be able to pump out an installment every week. That pace is part of what gives manga its character.)

Aaron is correct. As someone who has studied both illustration and comics, I can say for certain there is a huge difference between the two. lllustration is based on conveying an idea in one piece, while comics/manga study sequential art. Illustration classes stress use of color, material, and composition (and usually pleasing clients) to create a solid piece. Comic classes, which do touch on those things, stress panel movement, dialogue, pacing, and other elements specific to successful comics more. And I'm friends with many indie comic artists who would most likely be offended if they were referred to as "variations of illustrators." |

With Carl and Matt leaving, does this mean Viz's translations will be even more inaccurate?

You assume Matt is leaving because of he's teaching in Japan? -t |

There seems to be quite a lot of confusion with this item. Matt's actually *been* teaching at Kyoto Seika since 2000 (see his CV), and hasn't been with Viz in any capacity since 1999 or so. In fact, the Department of Cartoon and Comic art has been around for quite a few years as well, so I'm really not sure exactly why any of this is news. Also, Carl Horn is not a translator, but an editor. Even though he is now with Dark Horse, I believe he is still working on some Viz titles, or at least Evangelion. |
