Numbers seem pretty low but like some users said, the definition of each type of otaku is kinda hard to define, even harder to throw it into a study like this.
Though if we added several of these type together, like one of the users also pointed out, I think we'd get numbers I'd not be as surprised with. |

So the average otaku only buys one anime series during the entire year. Out of more than 100 produced. Damn.
I don't blame them since the discs are so damn expensive, though. |

Wow... Much lower than I thought. I spend a loooot more than that. ^^;
Also are they not including the cost of events in the expenses? |

You could blow all that at one Comiket.
But it sounds like the break down is divided amongst each group, so it's hundreds here, hundreds there. |

I spend 1.5-2x as much on import games yearly depending on exchange rate and amount of games. I've imported 20 games this year (although 6 were free digital PS+ games and 2 others were discounted physical titles).

I imagine that there are lots of people polled who don't spend much, which averages out the whales who spend thousands.

This. Anime: 29,843 yen (US$262) is about one 2-cour series on average. Very sad people in Japan can't afford it either. |

Not to mention anime these days aren't of $262 buying quality, you're better off buying CDs, games, merchandise, or the manga or LN it's based off if it's an adaptation |

Uh, not even that. (If you're referring to Japan) A single-cour series, regular edition, is ~6000 yen per volume, with 2 episodes on each, do the math. And that's more the DVDs, bluray average seems to be ~6500-7000 yen apiece. Special/limited editions will run you down a lot more... |

That's about the cost of a one-cour series, not two. If a series spans 5 volumes, at about $70 a volume retail for a BD, that's about $350. Buying off Amazon will save you about $100. Edit: Whoops, got beat to it. ^^; |

I thought that you didn't even really qualify as an otaku if you weren't spending at least 1k.

I was going to say 'wow, that's expensive', but I realised the UK's not that much better off. 1 BD averages on ~£40 ($50). If you're lucky, that's 1 cour of an anime ( ex. Seraph of the End). But usually, it's for one half of a series (Future Diary), which there really isn't much excuse for on BDs. I saw an article on ANN that said the BD plants are primarily in Poland (some also say 'made in germany', but correct me if I'm wrong?), so they'll probably go even further up in price soon.
fff-- I take it back. two episodes?? If the next season of anime depends on BD sales, no wonder so many anime don't get a second cour. that's crazy. That aside, I'm surprised surivival games rank as high as #5. They're pretty underground here, but I guess if it's popular enough to get anime based on it... For anime I probably spend less now though. BDs are expensive and I don't feel it's too worth buying DVDs (it's gotten to the point one can actually see the difference now, with anime at least), so I only buy stuff I really like and have cr + netflix for everything else. In most cases wouldn't figures technically overlap with anime? Or at least, wouldn't someone who buys anime also buy figures? even the 1/6 scales from the big high-quality companies are probably cheaper than buying the BD's ;; |

By volume, I hope you know I meant 2-3 episodes (= 5-6 volumes for a one-cour series). You're lucky to even get half a series for just $50. One thing I think that's great about non-Japanese releases is that you usually get half or a full series per release. It's great for marathoning and you're not constantly waiting for the next volume to come out. (Of course Aniplex and PonyCan USA are generally exempt from this, though I think they do pack more episodes per release than Japanese ones unless it's a straight import.) |

I'm honestly surprised that us model train otaku were #4, but were the only sub-group of tetsudou-oaku listed. I really do not have the time to type all of our sub-groups out, so I'll refer to http://en.rocketnews24.com/2014/04/21/better-know-a-train-nerd-36-different-classifications-for-japans-densha-otaku/ who did a nice job breaking it down.
But, I know quite a few (including myself) of Nori-tetsu, Ekiben-tetsu Ori-tetsu and Haisen-tetsu who easily spend over ¥10'000 per outing ,and do five or six a year easily. I know my tetsu hobby runs about ¥55'000 a year, (or at least that's all my wife knows about) and that may not be including over night hotel costs, camera gear or any other ancillary expenses related. |

Yeah, I only saw your post after I posted mine. For only two episodes... that's crazy. They just wouldn't sell here. I read here that if an anime gets a second season is really dependent on BD sales, but seeing the BD prices you can see why so many don't. I'm in the UK and they used to release series in 3-episode volumes first, then the box sets later, but they don't sell and people just wait for the full series release, so they've stopped that now. (I think the last series to be released in more than two parts was Sword Art Online). |
