It's always funny and ridicuous that manga authors are living in caves and almost never appear publicly. Laughing

I've heard some manga authors can be very shy and introverted people, making it hard for them to be at ease appearing at public events as big as this. Kouhei himself commented on the event, "I have thought this (being a mangaka) is a kind of job (which) I don't need to appear before public. But I have decided (to join) because I received advice from great people that I should."

In other cases some manga authors strongly wish to protect their privacy from being invaded by zealous fans who know their faces. Like how they wear masks at events and insist no photos or recordings of them can be taken at all.

I wonder if that was an homage to Toriyama-sensei's author avatar in Dr. Slump (and occasionally Dragon Ball)? I mean, wearing a mask is one thing, but specifically a gas mask?

Could be, alternatively one of the super villains to appear in a recent story line was called Mustard, and wore a gas mask to prevent. Eing poisoned by his own quirk.
