I feel like Japanese gamers in Japan are being taken advantage of by these fremium games, yet no one in Japan speaks out about this whole mess it's practically affected the Japanese AAA development where it pales in comparison to a decade ago.

SE has addressed this issue and Cygames has a spending limit in Granblue Fantasy, but no one else in the gaming industry has addressed this issue and fans, you'd be dreaming if you thought many are speaking out, because almost no gamers in Japan are speaking out against the practice and worse yet, some encourage it by flashing amounts up to $30,000 on Twitter to spend on these games and you can find Youtube videos of people spending thousands of dollars on these games just one character. it's sad and it's destroying the industry and quite a few genres there.

Don't see what the big deal is. We have mobile games also, that make you pay money if you want cheats, candies, and other stuff. You can spend hundreds and even thousands on them. No one has a gun to your head. If you don't like it, don't buy it, and if you buy it or get it free, don't use those micro-transactions.

Some guy just sold a virtual space station in (in think) Eve Online for a half a million dollars of real money. More power to them.

I'm curious; can you point to specific ways in which you think it's affected AAA development? Ithink there's a case to be made that the AAA market is smaller in terms of titles than it's been in the past, but there are infinitely many causes for that (including a simultaneous race to the top and race to the bottom that's essentially evaporated the 'double-A' market) and as others have noted it's really unclear to me why you think this is a particularly Japanese issue.

The game also passed 30 million players earlier in the month.

18 million in means 1 in 7 people in japan have played the game. Although that isn't counting people who have more than 1 account or people who have Japanese accounts from other parts of the world.

I wonder how many players the English server has?

What is so appealing about this franchise, let alone idol franchises in general? From seeing the third series, I could see GL/yuri vibes might have a factor in it.
