And that's a bad thing....? Anime smallmouth

As for me, I'm really excited about these licensed titles, and am so glad that the rumors actually turned out to be true for once. Guess I should try to go and watch the Earthian OVA now so I can get psyched for the manga release.

Yes, expect the market to be saturated with mediocre title once ADV, Viz and Del Ray start theirs.

It's not really clear. Tokyopop really didn't get into it over the phone, and I can venture some obvious speculation, but It'd be nothing more than that, speculation...

Alright, even though I'm not into this kinda stuff, isn't yaoi more gross than yuri? I could never figure out the facsination that some men have with girl on girl, but at least it is better than guy on guy.

It's all a matter of what floats your boat!

In my humble (female) opinion no way is yaoi more gross than yuri.
Girl on girl is dull. Guy and guy is Very Happy

If Loveless has yuri I shan't be bothering with it.

(By the way neither is actually gross - love is love)

Bangwagon? I hope that's an unintentional typo. Of course they are, when the genre making the most money under shounen is 'yaoi' you're going to market to it. That's just common sense. It's not a fad or trend, they are simply catering to a market that's swelled so much it can no longer be ignored.

As for Yuri - it's not all sexual, most Yuri is romantic more than sexual, so more often than not Yuri will NOT APPEAL to male audiences at all. There is a difference between girls on girls in HENTAI then there is in YURI. That distinction should be made before you turn your nose in disgust at Yuri.

I am not a fan of it [Yuri] at all, but I won't bash either, that's just silly. To each his own, there is plenty of space on the bookshelf.

Well, it's good marketing IF they do use restraint. For the most part the yaoi labels have been very effective in selling a small number of titles to their target audiences. Darkhunter's fear (which is justifiable) is that TP is going to apply the "flood" strategy to the Blu line and show no restraint in releasing titles. It worked to a degree with their other titles (though not without consiquences), but I seriously doubt that could work for a specialized genre, even if it is as popular as yaoi. But I doubt TP will try something like this. As long as they put out a reasonable number of titles, with the occasional crossover hit, I don't see any reason why this will be bad for the market (unless of course they do try to saturate the market).
As for yuri, I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the genre, so maybe you could clear up the definition (is it for guys or girls?). The mangas that I've read with lesbian themes (Love My Life, and the exellent Blue) don't dwell on the sexual aspect the way that most yaoi mangas I've seen do. Love My life does make homosexuality the central theme, but it's more about the relationship between the girls with the rest of society than their romance (the author is gay herself).

Exclamation Now that I would fear also. TP is known for saturating the market with everything be it crap or quality, yet I did note they were keen to make clear they were not 'publishing it' just 'distributing it', so I imagine the actual company bringing it over would be the one to talk to.

For the next question, it has always been my understanding original Yuri does focus more on the romance than sex, but is sexual. It's intended audience is indeed women, but I am sure it has it's share of male fans like 'yaoi' does here in the west. The female-female sex in Hentai is by no means Yuri Smile and one can see the difference immedietly, just as you have.

Arrow An interesting note, in Japan some BL [boy's love] manga-ka would take issue to their works being called 'yaoi.' 'Yaoi' in Japan denotes a specific genre of BL that is more about sex than plot - whereas Boy's Love is a blanket term for more plotted manga that do have male/male sex themes in them but so light to moderate it's not considered 'yaoi'. For example - Level C is 'Yaoi-Manga' and Only the Ring Finger Knows is 'BL Manga'. Here it's all just 'YAOI!' Surprised Either hard yaoi or soft yaoi, it's all yaoi.

If you go to the Comiket girls tables looking for a 'Yaoi Manga' you'll find the plotless stuff sexual fun - if you go looking for 'June[applied to fictional works] or BL-manga' then you'll find more interesting male/male stories where sex isn't the plot clincher.

As for Yuri and Shoujo-ai, I am clueless about the Japanese distinction there so I won't comment other than what I stated above.

Earthian is all well and good, but, more importantly- LOVE MODE!!!!!! Yuki Shimizu's Love Mode, where [most of] the men look like men, and it caters to fans of both fui fui yaoi romance and the more lustful stuff. I think it was my first hard yaoi title, but, with the exception of Recipe (also by Yuki Shimizu) I still consider it the best. I mean, not many yaoi titles last 11 volumes, and realistically, you don't see good character developement like you get in Love Mode very often in them either. Of course, it has its episodic moments, but even those are interesting.

Sorry about that. I'm just really excited Embarassed I mean, with all the not as interesting and short yaoi titles being licensed I had a bad feeling that a longer series like Love Mode didn't stand much of a chance. Hopefully they'll do a good job Anime catgrin
