According to a yuri blog I follow, Comic Cune is really good for slightly-weird moe manga that lacks any Y chromosome. While I'd prefer more series be animated with more than subtext GL, I'm (tentatively?) happy to see this be green lit.

^ Nice to see a fellow GL fan. I'm slightly looking forward to this as well.

Wait let me get this straight her friend "literally" eats books? I've eaten paper before but just to make spit wads and have never actually swallowed said paper. On the other hand though it's nice to know that Hinako Note could possibly have Yuri subtext in it. Cool

Wow, Crunchyroll has a very different description of this series:
Crunchyroll wrote:

The 2014 cute girl comedy four panel follows an introverted girl whose quiet connection to animals caused her neighbors to use her as a scarecrow, and her eccentric friends.

I'm not saying both descriptions can't be accurate. In fact, I hope they are. Then we get an anime about a girl who wants to be a better communicator moving from the rural countryside to the city to join a theater club, living in a used bookstore with another girl who eats the books (that can't be good for business), and working part time as a scarecrow...I think?

MAL has a similar summary. https://myanimelist.net/manga/87962/Hinako_Note?q=hinako

So we either have a scarecrow girl, or a girl that eats books. I really don't know which one is weirder.

I'm 100% certain that the main character's background as a "former scarecrow" will be a tragic past that gets mentioned once or maybe twice at the beginning of the series, and plays no bigger part than that whatsoever.

Deciphering plot descriptions is a skill. More often than not the Japanese descriptions mention things that are only relevant for the first chapter, and don't actually describe the series well at all.

Reminds me of when the first season of Miss Monochrome was under production and ANN kept using the same description of her being a girl who dislikes colors -- something that I'm pretty sure never once came up in the anime.

My first reaction of that is

So good to see some fellow yuri/GL fans here. Anyway, this could be interesting to watch.

A girl who eats books? Is this Bungaku Shoujo all over again?

Maybe it was evil teenagers who forced her to pretend she was a scarecrow as punishment for not having enough lunch money to give them.

Or maybe it is a crappy translation app.

There is also the issue in that a actual scarecrow is meant to scare away animals, but she attracts them to her self.

Consider the number of anime descriptions that seem to no longer apply after the first episode, I wouldn't be surprised at both being correct.

Man deciphering plot descriptions of anime is an art in itself. I like to go through the list of shows in an upcoming season and half the time I'm like "What. What does this even mean?"
I'm going to take a wild guess and say this is a cute girls doing cute things without much plot kind of show. Not usually my style but a book eater will at least convince me to check it out. That can't be good for your health. Stomach cancer away!

Wow, would I have loved to have been a fly on the wall during that brainstorming session.

"Okay, we need a quirky friend, what's her angle?"
"Books!"
"You mean she likes to read-"
"Eats them!"
"That doesn't sound particularly moe."
"Just make her kuudere and no one will care, it worked for GochiUsa."

In other news, it looks like someone has the license to the manga, as the series has already been taken down from the more considerate scanlation sites.
