A good start so far although some of the themes of the series has very similar ideas compared to the original series. Either way, I personally like this show a lot mostly for the idols and the songs. Nothing too impressive yet but has a lot of potential.

Yohane is the coolest character imo so far Very Happy

I'm not sure how well the show will hold up when the entire group of nine's all gathered and functioning as one unit, but I'm really enjoying the character dynamics so far. All the characters enable ridiculous antics in their own ways, while I felt like some characters in the original didn't really participate in those hijinks except to shut them down. Considering that that's always been my favorite part of my franchise, it feels like a huge boon in Sunshine's favor. Plus Chika, Riko, and You are just a really strong core trio in general, since they bounce so naturally off each other that their most mundane of interactions are fun to watch.

This may sound weird considering the premise of the entire series, but am I the only one who doesn't actually care about the music? There's just something about Love Live that compels me to watch it without really caring for idols or that style of music.

It's magic I tell you.

I'm watching it on Funimation and haven't seen it on CR.

Bamboo's review seem to cover all the major spots, but I was actually a little disappointed when Aquon's very first concert seemed to go so well. Somehow the stage backdrop and the lighting and the music just seemed to appear out of thin air.

That seems to be an attribute of these idol shows. Wake Up Girls did the same thing but at least The Idol Master at least payed some lip service to all the behind-the-scenes stuff it takes to make up a show. Locodol makes it feel like there is work going on there and I hope LLS follows that model.

And they managed to fill the room somehow. Muse started playing to a mostly empty theater. This isn't going to be very interesting of Aquon just sails to the top/

Is that a joke? Did you just throw out Wake Up Girls without even bothering to watch it in an assumption that it did the same? Wake Up Girls actually focused a good deal on the music production, particularly the band that the new songs for the idol group to sing came from. It also showed a rehearsal before the big performance at the end of the series and the stage equipment there played a pretty important plot point, clearly showing that work had been put in place for the various idol group's performance. And even then, that's the only time where WUG performs in a big theatre that would require setup. Most of the live concerts were just street performances or at a small private establishment (like the hot springs/inn) that didn't have any lighting or stage production needed. Ticks me off when people just throw in WUG without realizing just how much it did right when it came to what starting an idol group would be like in a closer to real life sense.

As far as Love Live Sunshine goes, it's the same thing in a different paint. The formula seems to work, so I guess as long as it continues to print money there's no reason to change it.

Watching this is an interesting experience since this is my first time dealing with this franchise. And so far, I like what I'm seeing so far (and wondering how the hell I missed out on this the first time). The main trio, as said before, have really solid chemistry with each other and can hold show on their own. At least I won't have to make rash comparisons with the original!

It makes me miss Chance Pop Session's idol music numbers, where sometimes everything would get really abstract when the girls started singing. I faintly recall one song being set to a photo slideshow of covered bridges or something equally bizarre...

I was "late to the party" when it came to Love Live first time around I enjoyed it enough but it didn't really hit me until The Final Live happened and that yes no more μ's and it made me realize how much I appreciate the series.

so when Aqours was announced I was skeptical about it then I decided to get in on the ground floor whole new cast of girls even new or relatively new Seiyuu voicing them.

I got hooked bought all the singles and albums and now I'm watching the series week to week and it's the highlight of my week. Also pretty much everything Bamboo has said would concur with my thoughts ( I am reviewing it as well on my much smaller blog) put a little differently but couldn't agree more.

I personally thought episode three was the strongest if only because Mari was introduced and I have high hopes for the Seiyuu that gives Mari her "Mariness" (for lack of a better term) Suzuki Aina.

The only real criticism I have of it is the distinct lack of anything substantive with the First Years although I think next week will hopefully fix that .

"The other girls have been introduced—chuunibyou Yoshiko, mentorly Kanan, rich girl Mari, hardened school council president (but secret school idol otaku) Dia, her cherubic little sister Ruby, and a host of others—"
poor hanamaru Sad , the only one not mentioned by name xD.

Also, when they said they were looking for the sound of the ocean ("Umi no uta" i think), was I the only one hoping It's Joke and Chika would just make her listen to an Umi only version of a Mu's song?

  • Option A: "I think we should take the franchise to a different place, shake it up a little, and try to do something interesting with this new show and new settings."

  • Option B: "That's an golden egg-laying goose, that franchise. No matter what we do, people will eat it up, regardless of how many afford we'll actually put it. Just redo the first season again, down to the character archtypes and their actions."

And they chose.... the lazy route.

I don't care how similar it is to the first season, I am still enjoying it immensely so far.

As a long time fan of the franchise, I'm always interested to hear what people starting with Sunshine!! think about it. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far!

I really loved the 1st and 2nd episodes. Those two were quite enjoyable, both in their delivery and their jokes. I liked how they introduced everyone in episode 1, and I love how Chika influenced Riko to move from her failure on the piano on episode 2.

But for episode 3, I can't say I like it.

The story in episode 3 is mostly not convincing. Mari's challenge comes off as unnatural, and the crisis the trio faced were too artificial for me to relate to. It would even be exaggerating to call Mari's challenge as a crisis either; it is trivial at best, and not impressing at worst.

I also felt a bit uncomfortable with the way they portray the group's naming. It was just too random. I don't see any reason why Aqours would stood out more than, let's say, 'Three Mermaids' that Riko was suggesting. There are ways that are better in introducing the group's name, but this sounds so forced that I don't feel any sort of connection to the name.

Moreover, the episode tried too hard on recreating μ’s first live episode. It wouldn't really matter if it was well executed. Unfortunately, the plot leading up to Aqours' first live was not engaging and the subsequent execution is not particularly good. I'd rather they have a different manner of debut episode than simply following their predecessors.

Lastly, the return of the 'groping girl' stereotype in the form of Mari is the most disappointing thing. I am glad that those stereotypes were absent in the 2nd season and the movie, but seeing it returning to LLSS - even if it's meant as a joke - is a huge let down. I hope it won't be a recurring act because for god's sake it didn't help anything.

Overall, I do enjoy the show and I think it had a lot of potential if it starts to move away from the boundaries of the original. But if it continues to blindly follows their predecessor's path like they did in the 3rd episode, I don't think it will go really far. Aqours after all, needed to get out of μ’s shadow, and with the way they portray their first live, it wouldn't do this group any good.
