These first two episodes were very charming for me. I was not a fan of its predecessor Aria, but Amanchu! has a great balance between comedy and light drama that have made this new show not boring.

I absolutely loved aria, and it is one of my favorite anime. These first two episodes of Amanchu! have not disappointed me. Can't wait to see more.

Are those things on Cha's head oni horns or gold coins? I know there's a Japanese idiom about giving gold coins to cats, so I'm leaning in the direction of the latter.

As a firm believer in the Jane Lane theory of puppets making everything funnier, I'm totally cool with Hikari being in Muppet mode 95% of the time.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of the Kermit the Frog-like appearance of Pikari.

With that aside, I've been really enjoying the show. Very funny, soothing, and just an all-around feel-good show.

It was one of my most anticipated show this season. I loved episode one, and I buitl my entire day today around preparing to watch this week's episode. Pikari is -almost- going too far with the SD thing. but not quite yet. I enjoy Sato's work, and so far this knocks it out of the park.

I love a good character that 'can't read the air' like Pikari. I feel like I could write a small essay on her appeal just two episodes in.

Also you know the inevitable hug pillow is gonna have the SD face on one side. Calling it now. The image is too ridiculous not to mention.

I'm also fond of the girls' school uniforms, although I'm driven to wonder how Pikari can move around so freely in a skirt that long.

I find them rather stifling. They might as well be nun's habits. They were clearly designed with the thought of keeping the girls "proper" in some highly conservative sense of the word.

It is also somewhat at odds with the rather free-spirit attitude of the home-room teacher Katori. In her opening lecture she made it sound like studying was not really much of a priority here. I don't think she even mentioned it except as something you "might" do.

Overall I rather like this. I almost took a pass based on the still shots of Kohinata looking like a coked-out stick figure.

Mostly watching this for the diving, and how they weren't boiling in those drysuits I have no idea.

Also, what is up with those knee-high boots?

The uniforms seem to be based off of the undine uniforms from Aria, and I love them personally. No matter how impractical they may seem.

@HaruhiToy: She didn't say that studying was not a priority, she said spend your 3 years at that school in a way that you enjoy. If that is studying: then do it. If it is club activities: then do it. If it is being lazy and doing nothing at all: hell, do it. These three years will be over before you know it. Have fun, and leave with no regrets.

Just wondering is the staff saving on animation costs by doing the face that way or was there a reason for the odd way the face is?

A quite strong Flying Witch vibe I'm getting here. We have an interesting and quite energetic main character, while the show itself is more laid-back and relaxed. That juxtaposition is working here nicely.

It's just something the mangaka likes to do. It has been the same in Aria too.

Truth be told, this kind of makes me want to give Aria another try. I watched the first episode ten-ish years ago, and while I didn't exactly dislike it, I think my as-yet-undeveloped appreciation for iyashikei kept me from going any further with it.

You really should because Aria is actually not only a healing anime, but has a lot more to offer. Be it symbolism, interesting viewpoints, deep messages and and and. Not to say Amanchu is worse or anything and I love both manga and anime but Aria is a very big franchise which is on a different level.

My impression of the usual Japanese (as well as many other nationalities) approach to high school is that a) you better study like hell or you won't get into any decent university, b) if you don't get into a decent university you won't get a decent job anywhere, c) you test scores are everything and everything is your test scores, d) you are going to basically have a worthless life unless we pass you, ... and so on. Maybe not that extremeness but it is quite a contrast to the "just do what feels good" vibe we laid down here.

I wanted to like this because I love Aria, but I absolutely hate Pikari and kept wishing she'd trip on that stupid uniform and choke on her whistle and die. So, here's the second show I'm dropping in week two.
