So the first one will be "cool intro movie" and part 2 is "Babi makes the train jump the rails"

First reaction: "What?!"
Second reaction: "Why?"
A series with a strong initial premise that devolved into mediocre action show...

I imagine that the animation will be generally improved in those compilation movies and they will presumably also add a few new scenes too. That could be interesting.
The show wasn't anything special, in the end, but it remains among the best sellers of the season, so the sharp negativity in certain online circles is not necessarily universal. The ending wasn't too bad either, which will probably help balance the scales a little.

Hope each movie gets a new theme, like SnK compilations

This seems like one of those things that was decided ahead of time more than anything. Gundam series always get these recuts regardless of how popular they are too. This show was clearly banked on as some sort of savior of noitaminA and possibly even action anime too.
Then again it could just be more of the industry having absolutely no idea what it wants to do with itself anymore and just trying to find ways to make more money any way in which it can. It'll probably have some sort of benefits scheme to lure people to see them that has nothing to do with people actually really wanting to sit down and see a recut of this series that doesn't need it again. Popular late night anime has long since stopped by about the actual anime and story itself after all.
What I love is they seem to be airing them only once a week apart from one another. Just seems totally pointless....again kind of like what most of the late night anime industry does and puts out as content nowadays.

Vol. 1 out of 3 sold 6,081 BDs, 799 DVDs. Slightly above average.

Actually, that makes it the second or third best selling volume 1 of this season. It's only "average" in the grand scheme of things, absolutely, but the fact is almost no other spring 2016 show has sold better in its initial release.

Season 2 will be announced by the voice actors to come out in 2017, but when 2017 comes, it doesn't happen.

That doesn't mean much when everything this season just about flat out tanked. Kabaneri was overestimated by about 30% for it's first week sales and sold less than half of it's predecessor Guilty Crowns first volume with an event ticket and because it's locked into only 2 more volumes it's probably going to drop noticeably from there. Pretty much nothing is going to come close to hitting it's target this season and even last year it's first week sales would have only been good for slotting in right in the middle of the pack. It just seems like late night anime otaku just aren't that into anything recent besides a few Bandai Visual franchises like Love Live, iDOLM@STER and GuP right now when it comes to just splurging on media.
To put it in perspective:
2011 Spring anime Volume 1 279,641 discs
2012 Spring anime Volume 1 165,561 discs
2013 spring anime Volume 1 336,567 discs
2014 spring anime Volume 1 290,204 discs
2015 spring anime Volume 1 245,050 discs
2016 spring anime, Volume 1 * 49.267 discs (so far)
This is by far the worst Spring season for anime Blu-Ray disc sales this decade and it's already way too big a gap for it to make up even with the seasons tail on it's first volumes. Less than a fifth of even an average Spring season (263,404 from 20111-2015, 227,715 if you include 2016 in the average) so far with only one other major release to come in Macross Delta and EVERYTHING has event tickets (frankly I think they've just been devalued now that they're getting handed out like candy on halloween and most are just lottery tickets to maybe get a prize making anime disc buying almost like a mobage gacha scam) and in some cases big advertising campaigns spent on them, particularly Kabaneri, High School Fleet and Kiznaiver. It really does look like an era of a particular business model coming to a close this year. Maybe Late Night anime can survive with streaming deals and foreign investment but I'm not even sure if it's worth it at this point considering the extremely poor storytelling quality of it's recent designed by committee to be popular franchises like this one.
Anyway that was long but I just grow weary of all this pretending that everything is a-okay with late night anime and it's BD business model and this show cause it's a "best seller" when if you clearly look at the situation it's clearly you know....not a healthy look at all. Again just think of the kind of advertising stuff like this show had for a very very meager return and grossly overestimated first volume sales. These kinds of blanket ad campaigns and constant publicity don't come cheap and late night anime used to be able to do way better than the kinds of numbers we're seeing with good old fashioned word of mouth, modest publicity and no need for incentives like event tickets and benefits. Hell Girls und Panzer Der Film did it so I don't know, maybe the industry needs to make more shows people just like instead of trying to get around having to do that with production committee schemes.

Actually, without access to exact budget information and data on other sources of income, which varies a lot between shows as Justin himself has explained in ANN features on the subject, you can't really claim that a series has "tanked" simply based on the sales alone. In other words, selling under 10k does not mean tanking. Just like selling over that figure doesn't mean success either. If you think Amazon stalker points are the only factor worth taking into consideration, that's very simplistic and incomplete.
Before you make too many questionable comparisons, keep in mind that Guilty Crown was twice as long and the production details weren't necessarily the same in both cases.
You might have a point about the spring season underperforming, in historical terms, but it's too soon to make any sweeping conclusions about whether this is a temporary or permanent change, and how well each particular show's finances are or aren't performing.
Not to mention that, as your figures imply, even the spring shows with more popular or critical acclaim aren't doing so hot this season either. That complicates the picture.

Maybe it's a sign that the industry needs to shrink when too much otakubucks are spread too thin, and most recently for discs have been put into Girls und Panzer.

Why does one season underselling have to mean anything long term? Every industry has good years and bad years, so this could just be a bad season (in terms of sales). It doesn't mean the late night anime business model is suddenly failing when a single season undersells.

Yes, but the question isn't, "How well it performed compared to the other shows on the Spring Season?" (well, it a bit is, however), it's, "Has it managed to start recouping its investment and production costs?"
A total of 6,800 units in nice, doubly so when most of the rest of the shows are 4,000-and-lower, but is it enough to warrant theatrical versions? I doubt it.
