Kinda surprised about Tokyo Tribes, as I barely notice it on the radar, since I'm more into the Boondocks.

Ths is quite interesting. I have to admit, I didn't expect Tokyo Tribes to be on there either. I thought some Jump titles would make it. Makes me want to check it out.

I'm surprised too, in a way, but in a happy way. I'm extremely glad it made it on here because, in my opinion, it both tries and accomplishes something that few other manga recently have; being truthful/real without being over the top or boring about it.

It was released over a period of several years. As long as a series continues, it can be nominated and win Eisners.
I think that Barefoot Gen pretty much has it in the bag. Persepolis and Buddha are both up there in terms of quality, but Gen's powerful subject matter and the fact that it's so well known, even outside of comic circles, make it hard for the judges to ignore. And I'm pretty suprised by Tokyo Tribes as well. It wasn't bad, but there are just so many better things out there. I suspect that it got considered because it seems the hype surrounding it got it noticed by the mainstream comic community. Other things from Tokyopop were far better, like Kare Kano or Planetes, but these titles didn't become noticed by the comic comminity, and ultimatally, that's what the award nominations boil down to (the Eisners at least).

Sorry if I'm missing something, but how are these two titles related? I guess they both do use some imagry and ideas of Black America, but for totally diffrent reasons. Can't really make a connection beyond that...good to see another Boondocks fan though.
