I would have picked something else over The Sims, but it's hard to argue that these games don't deserve some recognition.

As a Sonic fan, I feel honored. I'm sure plenty of Sonic fans must feel insulted though. I've met a lot of Sonic fans who keep finding reasons to hate everything, especially things they should feel proud about.

They might be next year.
I hope they also at least nominate Wii Sports. It's a game that the traditional gaming audiences don't really care much for, but its impact on mainstream culture at large has been vast, which is the pattern I'm seeing in regards to what gets nominated.

I must agree, given this year is Pokemon's 20th Anniversary seems reasonable it should have been inducted this year. I think Sim City should have been inducted before The Sims. I know the Sims is super popular but The Sims wouldn't exist without Sim City. Still solid choices but as someone not familiar with the GTA franchise I'm a little surprised it's the third game to be entered in first, granted I could see Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas being entered just because of the infamy the game gained thanks to the Hot Coffee mod
Glad to see Sonic in, the mismanagement of the franchise has soured people even on the originals and franchise as a whole, but the original and it's immediate sequel did so much to push Sega to the forefront of gaming giving a Nintendo a real run for their money.

I think Grand Theft Auto 3 was chosen because it was the first one to really break into the mainstream. It also inspired the look for a whole wave of urban sandbox games over the next several years.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Sonic the Hedgehog made it in despite the title's recent quality problems. Perhaps the retro titles from the Sega Genesis & Dreamcast eras were a factor...

It's specifically the 16-bit Sonic 1 that got in, not the franchise as a whole.
