I really like most everything he has released; however, what changed my musical life both in writing and listening forever was predictably the opening for the original Ghost In the Shell. I remember renting the video tape and I kept rewinding it to the start over and over again. That music and the movie sold me for life on anime. Previously I'd only rented VHS tapes out of curiosity of only two titles before Ghost.. Record of Lodoss War, and Guyver.
I was of course beyond overjoyed when I purchased Ghost in the Shell "Innocence" only to find out that the original music had been expanded upon. It still floors me to this day.
I made a purchase not long ago that's well worth the high price tag. It's a Kenji Kawai's double DVD concert that's filled with greatness. In fact, those clips of the choir singing etc in the toco toco interview clip for this article is taken from that DVD concert. The title of the concert is 'Kenji Kawai Concert 2007 Cinema Symphony'. I found it at CDJapan. So worth the purchase! Thanks for the interest article ANN!!!

I haven't watched the full clip yet but wish to thank the ANN staff (and for that matter the toco toco programme and Kenji Kawai himself of course) for making this available.

This is so cool. I was only vaguely aware of Toco Toco, but that channel is a serious gold-mine of awesome interviews with creators. Thrilled that this exists. And Kenji Kawai is an awesome composer. I've really enjoyed a ton of his stuff. The amount of anime under his belt is pretty jaw-dropping really. Hard to believe he considers himself a slacker given how much he as accomplished.

This is really cool.
Yeah, he's done so many fantastic soundtracks. One of my favorite composers. Regularly listen to a lot of his soundtracks and I always look forward to finding out he's working on a show/movie.
Even amongst strong competition, he also did my favorite music for Gundam so far with his work on Gundam 00.

The Ghost in the Shell movie soundtrack is very good and contributes greatly to the fantastic atmosphere, no doubt, but I'm personally more a fan of his work on Patlabor.
Possibly because I like Patlabor a bit more in general but, again, he does such great work at conjuring up a very special atmosphere with his music and bringing the world to life. Patlabor has many faces and the soundtrack is on point and supporting every single one.
Most individual tracks aren't as bombastic and so full of atmosphere as in the GitS OST, but there are so many tracks that there's something suiting every occasion.
In TocoToco, he mentions he likes warm music and thinking about it, there is a fair amount of warm music present in Patlabor.

I really love his work in the GITS films. The tracks he made are just extremely inspiring on their own as well as quite suited for the action performing on screen.
The Ballad of the Puppets is just a master piece...
