Even though it was definitely leading into it, I'm still taken aback now that it has been formally announced

We all saw it coming but to see an official announcement really makes sad.
I feel One Piece will end sooner that we think.

It is nice that it the New World is being streamlined, it wouldn't be right having it the same as Paradise and going from island to island, with a new arc on each one until they reach the end.
Having this objective based story, cuts down on detours and makes more sense.

Well from what i read on the past about One piece, it will end with about 100-120 volumes
I don't have the source(forgot it i think it was an interview or something) but anyone can see that OP is coming to a conclusion
We are volume 81 and only 5-4 volumes are shipped per year.
Oda also noted that end of chapter 597 was the end of the first half of OP.
So yeah still a long time before OP ends

I'm just wondering, why is this news? Don't follow the series, and nothing in the article seems to indicate much beyond "a new arc is starting"...

Because it is a game changing arc as far as I can tell.

Why are you here then?
The Four emperors are the rulers of the sea and the strongest pirates. Luffy is officially dealing with them and that will lead him to the treasure "One Piece"

This pretty much confirms that Zou is the last arc in the Pirate Alliance Saga. I'm extremely excited for what's to come, 2016 is already an amazing year for One Piece.

I don't wish it to end, if it continues with this great management of the gigantic world building it always has, but at the same time, announcements like this one makes me think of the opposite (like, an internal desire, a "final arc hype", for one of my favorite shounen manga).

I don't really know how that could be the case. The whole point of the alliance was to take out the Emperors so they should be together until well after the Zou arc. They'll likely continue to stay together until they complete the map to One Piece.

We still got a little more than half of OP left. It ain't going to end prematurely unless Oda says so.

I remember back when people thought Bleach was approaching an ending.
Let's not jump to conclusions here. Even Naruto is basically starting back up again after 'ending'

Well okay, I'm not certain about it, but the way I see is that the next Saga will be all about taking down the Four Emperors, so a 'Four Emperors Saga' would form. Of course the Pirate Alliance remains, but the Straw Hats now have allies besides pirates as well.
That's just the way I see it though.
