I've always thought subscriptions for this kind of stuff was not worth it, never thought ANN would try it out though.
And...
Quote: | Access to the Community forum
A place to hang around with other people who thought it was worth it to support ANN. |
What the hell? Does that mean us little folk who aren't paying for this can't access the forums? Or is there going to be a separate magical fairy land forum for subscribers?
Anyways, whatever. I'm not buying it, but I'm sure it will work out well from a business standpoint.
EDIT: I decided to be a nice little poster and fix this up a bit.

Well, sites like these aren't cheap to run, you know.

It's a separate section of ANN's forum for subscribers only. Non-subscribers can still access the forum like normal, they just will not see the extra section is all.
Personally, I like the fact that us lowly users can finally support ANN directly for a change. I'm here all the time, so why not?
Edit: Rephrased the first sentence.

Aha, so it's not as end-of-the-world like as I thought.
Oh well, fine by me then.

Sites like ANN costs money to run. I think it's fine for them to ask for subscription which are more like donations to your local public television station than an actual subscription. I don't think people will subscribe for the benefits as much as they would to support something that they love. It isn't mandatory, and is common practice on most forums I frequent. Where else do you expect ANN to get money to maintain this site besides ads from a hurting industry? I suspect ANN might resort to ads from non-anime advertisers since there was a recent survey on consumer habits. If you don't want to see these ads simply subscribe, otherwise it is a small cost for a free website.

Putting the symbol next to the name/avatar was a nice touch seeing as it will become the cool thing to do thus netting more money and subscribers. When I actually have 20$ free you got me, I usually have a window of this site up almost 24/7.

Yes, it's a nice little reward for supporting the site, amongst the other incentives. Plus, the special community section is "off-topic." Meaning we can talk about almost anything.
Of course, being able to bask in the "eternal gratitude" from ANN's staff is the best part.

I like the ability to post OT in the community section. Now I post all of my recipes and go on and on with cooking tips lol.
My question is are the subscribers on the newer Peorth server or is there a completely new one? If there is a completely new one I suggest calling it Lind to continue the theme. Just silly fanboy ramblings there.

A great idea! I'll most likely subscribe after the holidays when I've got cash again, since the amount isn't outrageous and I feel that this site is worth it.

I'm with you guys on that! I'm subscribing tomorrow when I have a credit card available. I've always been a supporter of ANN and the industry, so this is the perfect opportunity. Also, it's nice to hear that there are some OT discussion in the new forum.

this is one of those few times id be happy to use a money order.
Maybe in Jan.

If there's one site I will support, it's ANN. It will be interesting to see when I subscribe, but that won't be until I get my financial issues into order, so wait just a little longer!!

I tried out subscriptions before. But the biggest problem I had was what features should be subscription only. Other than the removing of ads I had trouble releasing content just to subscribers. I felt that everyone should enjoy it and not just those who happened to have the money. Other than a few features (such as they could download higher quality video or use certain bandwidth heavy features) they just got access to information a little bit before everyone else. They were more like beta testers to information and ultimately I just trashed the entire idea.
Finally I just allowed users to donate money (they could choose how much) and if they did it would remove ads for that month. Everyone had access to the same information and features.
But I guess it is just a personal ideal that I don't like the idea of just releasing information, features, or other content to users who can afford to pay for it. That just feels like you are making a tiered system based on money and nothing else. And I can't go for that.
