They are probably not happy with the theater performance so they are trying to get back as much money as they can with an early release of the movie on DVD, since they think it will be more profitable. They wouldn't have done this if it was successful in theaters.

"As the movie was created for North American audience and has not been released in Japan, the DVD will not have a Japanese audio track."
EH?! Really? Wow. How did that happen? If there are any YGO fans out there, can you explain this to me? (And no, I didn't see this movie.) |

Not much to explain, the movie was made by 4-Kids and Hollywood, written by some unknown writer and director to fit in for the dub plotline (aka cash in on Pokemon's movie sucess)
The original Japanese version of Game King has no movies, since all of it's story is told throughout the TV series. |

No, I think it has more to do with trying to cash in on the holiday season. I'm sure that no mater how the movie performed in theaters it would be seeing this DVD release date. Emerje |

No, it was a Japanese-made movie. 4kids asked the Japanese producers and Kazuki Takahashi if they could make a movie. Kazuki rote the story. He said that he was doing it because of the popularity in America.4kids just told them to keep the violence at a PG level. I read it in Anime Insider. You can also look at some movie websites that list the credits like Rotten Tomatoes. I don't think even 4kids could be dumb enough to make their own movie. They are dumb enough to make their own musical. *cough*Pokemon*cough* Last edited by Animefan16 on Wed Sep 08, 2004 6:01 pm; edited 2 times in total |

Not true, there was a half hour movie back in '99, probably a short played in theaters with another anime movie. Emerje |

They're doing it to hit Christmas. Given the likely sub-$5 million budget it did just fine.
Franchise basically dead in Japan. America still building. 4Kids commissions movie, property not deemed big enough anymore to bother with a Japanese theatrical release.
|

You're right. The movie performed well (it's now posed to gross over 20 million dollars in North America plus according to boxofficemojo it already grossed some money overseas). The quick DVD release has nothing to do with the movie's performance. They just want to make as much money as possible during the holiday season. |

I wonder who they think they are going to be making money off of. There just aren't that many people that will pay $28 for a dvd. It's a rip off if you ask me. I won't be getting it.

Please don't trust Anime Insider, they said the movie would tie into the Japanese anime series and it doesn't. It's just some bull they spewed out, like they always do. The writer for the movie is Norman J. Grossfield, which is an odd way of spelling Kazuki Takahashi, if you ask me. I've also seen at least 4 other names under Director, so I have no clue what's going on. Either way, made by Japan or not, it's a dub-only movie that only fits into the dub plotline.
Not true, there was a half hour movie back in '99, probably a short played in theaters with another anime movie.
That was the crappy first series, the REAL series has no movies at all, the one made by TV Tokyo.
Uh, the "franchise" isn't dead in Japan, the anime still has 4 more episodes to air until the series finished. Even then, it's far from being dead, as you put it. |

That's pretty standard MSRP on a theatrical movie DVD. I'm sure places like Walmart will have the price cut down to nearly half that. Emerje |

You're kidding, right? Most anime DVDs sell for $29.99 SRP at stores, why should this anime DVD be any different? Also remember that the DVD price may reflect how much extras will be included, so don't start *another* bash against 4Kids just yet. Even if this price of the DVD is still too expensive, I have no doubt that Best Buy and other places to that nature will sell the DVD at a smaller price. but, if the price still has you in tears, there is always DeepDiscountDVD to give you the greatest dicount (that I know of). Also, no one is making you buy this DVD. I, myself, have no intention of buying a DVD of a movie I had no interest in to begin with. |
