Holy crap, Sentai... You guys are on the ball!
But while this is great and everything, there's the small matter of the other two seasons we're missing over here. I bought FUNimation's release (a smaller version of the Geneon release, really) when it first came out and adored it. I would love to own the whole series.

Great! I'll make sure to buy it. One problem... WE DON'T HAVE THE OTHER THREE SEASONS! I wanted to get the first season, but now...

We don't even have the top bun since the first season is OOP and really expensive.

Yeah, this is a very confusing move. Maybe it's their way of testing the waters for the other series to be released since it's the "fresh and new" offering. All I can say is all those who were looking for the other seasons to be licensed need to be there on release day!
Though I would much rather see this on Blu-ray, at least this is a step in the right direction considering that Funimation has no intention of touching the series again.

That would be incredibly stupid. Like, unbelievably, stupid. Sentai isn't stupid. I don't know what they're thinking, but I do know it's definitely not that.

Well, I enjoy the series, but I can't get excited about this if they're not gonna get the 2nd and 3rd (heck, and the first since it seems that it's OOP even though I own it). Sorry Sentai, I want to buy this and support you, but I can't skip from the first to the 4th. There's a progression to these things.

This.
I still regret not buying the first one while it was still in print. I just didn't have the money at the time... I spent it on figures

They are stupid with their prices compared to other companies. Evidence of this is that nearly every retailer sells their works at 20-33% off starting from day 1...because the retailers know people are not gonna pay 40-50 dollars for 12 episodes.
added note:
Article says
Quote: | he final television anime series will premiere in Japan on January 7 on the anime channel AT-X. |
WILL premiere on Jan 7th? That was 4 days ago (Japan time)...so shouldn't it be "series premiered in Japan on January 7th..."
and "will return" and ect. A lot of words in there that need to be past tense that are not.

Sentai Filmworks knows how to sell niche within the niche. There is definitely a fan base who has already bought the first season and watched the other two seasons fan-subbed online because they like the series that much. So a lot of that crowd will most likely buy it, but a blu-ray release would also help since "moe" and "blu-ray" usually go hand-n-hand with the moe fandom that actually support the industry.

Uh....wait...why did they license the 4th season when 2 and 3 haven't been touched? And they are releasing it this year? What the hell, Sentai? Bad move on their part if you ask me. I doubt anyone will buy this unless they watched the fansub versions of the other seasons.

Why is it so stupid? Other companies are doing this.
Funimation said if .hack//Quantum and Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike sell well they'll consider getting more titles from those franchises.
They're "fresh and new" (in a sense) and there are other franchise related titles that came before those, that aren't licensed.
Though I guess the flaw in my argument is I don't know if it's necessary to watch any other titles before watching Quantum and The First Strike or if they're stand alone stories.
