Due to the economy being the way it is, I don't want to be spending too much. I buy both anime and manga, and I have been thinking about taking a long break from manga, and focus on anime, since I am behind on several series that I would like to own. Sure, manga is cheaper, but when you think about how some manga have more than 20 volumes, that's alot you're paying for. With anime, many series are in box sets, and you get like half or (depending on how long it is) the whole series. Plus, anime finishes somewhere. And if you think about it, the 9.99 that's not going to manga could go to the DVD boxsets.
I guess I'm just curious to know if anyone else is doing/has done what I'm doing, or if there are even some that watch anime, but don't even read manga.

I still collect both, but I buy many more anime than manga- this is largely a space issue, DVDs are easier to store than manga books.

Cost is harder to balance out- there's less DVDs to buy, but they cost more. Plus you have to consider sales, boxsets, etc. that affect spending.

The most important thing is to buy what you enjoy more. I get more use out of my DVDs than manga... I don't revisit series terribly often (backlog's too big), so getting more out of the first run is important. A typical DVD takes longer to watch and has motion, color, and sound to enhance the expericence. My BF, on the other hand, repeats favorite series quite often. He prefers the pacing and extra 'imagination' of a long manga reading session with favorite music in the background... so he's a manga buyer.

His brother's mostly plays RPGs... that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish... Wink

It usually depends on which version the series is available in.
For example, Princess Tutu is only an anime (and if you attempt to correct me by pointing out the 2 volume wreck, you are wrong), so I obviously got the anime on that one.
For things that are manga only, like Parasyte, I obviously get the manga.
The grey area occurs for things with both an anime and manga. That's when I usually choose one over the other, but its a case by case basis. The only time when I've thought it a good idea to get both was for Cromartie High School, in which the anime almost feels like a supplement to the manga and they are both hilarious and totally worth it. I learned after Ranma 1/2 that I didn't see the point in having both the anime and manga when neither one added enough for me warrant having both (I sold my anime in this case, first 6 seasons). In the case of Maison Ikkoku, I went for manga because 1) its what I started with first and 2) availability. I started getting that series around when volume 3 or 4 of it came out in 2nd edition at which point it was rather easy to find, so availability plays a big role in it for me.
I don't really prefer one over the other, but I do prefer to pick one format. In the case of Mushi-shi, in which the manga from I think volume 6 on contains new stores, I may end up getting that because it has new things from the anime that would make it worth it, but I wouldn't bother to get 1-5 if all of their stories are in the anime.

I will say that my manga collection is bigger (it takes up about 3 units to my anime's approximatly 1 and it also has more titles), but its also mostly because I started getting manga about a year and a half earlier than I did anime and I have friends who gave me free manga and stuff.

For my part it's always been manga that has proved to be more of the collector's item for me. Mainly because it's cheaper, and it's something I can just pull off the shelf and enjoy.

Well, I've had to cut back on both because of college. I don't collect that many anime by single volumes anymore. Only three at the moment, Claymore, Code Geass, and When They Cry, (all of which I've seen already and am just buying because I liked them) and by the end of the year it'll only be two. I mostly buy collections nowadays. As far as manga goes, I never bought much of that to begin with and only follow about 7 o 8 series which only come out very sporadically.

Definitley taking a permanent stroll down Anime Lane. Although i do think i should make a couple of detours on Manga Road just becuase i don't get the full extent of some of the stories... however, i'm just somehow reluctant to get manga for some reason. Although i have no problems reading books, manga just seems like i wouldn't be able to sit through it, i have no idea why. I mean, i've been reading Fruits Basket since it's my favorite Anime series, yet i didn't get the full extent of the story... so i've been doing that. But yeah, it just doesn't seem like i'd be able to sit through it... but on the same token, i'm assuming that i'd read it all at once, becuase that is normally how i watch my anime... i don't know how that'd work. I needa find a good manga to start with (Fruits Basket doesn't count for the moment, i love it so natrually i can sit through it). So, yes, i certianly don't have a Manga Collection, just an Anime Collection. I'm perfeclty content with that too, in fact i'm delighted to have an anime collection. I think, in due time, i'll start collecting more Manga, probably when i get to college, and i may have more free time. Highschool's a beach. who the hell said senior year was easy? False!

I collect anime for one simple reason: I like anime. 'Nough said right. Well, not exaclty. It's more than that. Ever since i first saw Elfen Lied and was drowned in a the warm seas of anime, i've not wanted to surface yet. Sure i've gone through my own version of a hiatus, but that wasn't in my control... like i said, highschool's a beach. I wonder though, hah, in 15-20 years, if the anime that we're purchasing now, will be worth waaay more. Hm, well i woudln't sell it for my life. well okay, maybe for my life.

Well in the upcoming year I plan to cut out quite a bit of spending on both of them. I asked for a gift subscription to Netflix, so if I get it, that should keep the anime flowing for quite a while. As far as Manga goes, since most of the stuff I am collecting comes out every 2-3 months, it is really not a problem. I plan not to get into any new series. I will probably go through my collection and pare it down a bit by selling some of the ones that I don't plan to re-read, or maybe even DVDs for the ones I don't plan to re-watch.

Always been an anime-only collector. The medium of comics has never done anything at all for me, so I don't have any real interest in manga.

Recently I've been buying more manga than anime (because I'm low on cash and so it's easier to plunk down $10 at a time instead of $20) but in general I like anime more if the adaptation is good (or if it came first, like Princess Tutu--although the manga is so bad it's almost hilarious). Sometimes I like getting both...

...Really, I just love collecting things, so when I have a steady job I love getting both. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop Right now I'm probably focusing a little more on manga, though.

Definitely more of an anime collector. For one thing, anime seems to take up less shelf space, and that's important given my limited space available. Even for long-running series, DVD boxsets take less room (10 Naruto boxsets for Part 1 take up less than 27 volumes. Ditto for 10 One Piece boxsets up to the end of Alabasta as opposed to 20+ volumes, and 3 Bleach boxsets as opposed to 20 volumes).

Now if the manga either lacks an anime (O-Parts Hunter), will probably get an anime but maybe not a full adaptation (Fairy Tail), has an anime that didn't fully adapt it (Fullmetal Alchemist (before recent announcement), Gantz, Hunter x Hunter, Inuyasha, School Rumble, Tsubasa), the anime isn't licensed yet so I can only buy the manga (Gintama), has a different story or is different in enough aspects (Fullmetal Alchemist, Evangelion), or I simply enjoy the manga that much as well (I love the One Piece anime, but the manga is also worth owning for Oda's excellent art), then I'll buy it. But even still, compared to my anime collection, it doesn't compare.

Way more of an anime collector because I'm a DVD-hound in general. I collect some manga that I think are fabulous and have some connection to my favorite anime titles, but that's it, and even then I've given up on a few of those because in the long run...manga costs WAY more. For less reward for me personally, I've never been into comic books much. That's an aspect of nerdery (along with trading card games and spending over $40 for action figures) that kind of goes over my head, I guess.

So anime all the way. I just tend to like it a lot more. Except in the case of Fruits Basket. People just LOVE that anime until they read the manga and go "WOW. They missed such an opportunity here for a GREAT story and settled with a 'sweet' one." I still like that anime and all, but the manga is infinitely superior, and usually I don't say that, I just consider them "two different interpretations" without much bantery over which one's better.

I know what you mean. See, I bought manga because I wanted to see how my favorite anime began, so to speak. I've actually always been an anime person more than manga, but at one time, I thought manga was cheaper (you'd think $10.00 0r $8.00 a volume wouldn't cost much, but I too found out collecting manga does cost more.) My manga collection is actually bigger than my anime collection, but I want to expand my anime collection now. And like I said, the $10 that goes to manga, could go to boxsets and I may actually be paying less. Also, the aspect of nerdery was beginng to make me worry, I'll admit. Embarassed

Yeah I stick to buying anime for the most part since it would cost too much to collect manga. For many manga titles that have over 10 volumes, that's at least $100 for the series whereas if I buy an anime series in a complete set, it comes out to on average about $50. If I have the money, I wanna try getting at least one complete manga series. I'll be really selective about it though and only choose to buy my favorite series. And hopefully I'll eventually build up a nice library of manga in the future, but for now I'll stick with anime. I can read manga at the library anyway(that's where I read most of my manga now).
Oh but if you asked me which one I prefer without considering costs, it would be manga. I don't know why but I enjoy the manga experience more. I'll usually just grab manga and read whatever I want, but I feel limited with anime. I'll usually watch it once and leave it at that. With manga, whenever I'm bored or I just wanna go back to a scene, I can just flip the book open without having to scene skip or fastforward.

I collect both, but my anime collection far exceeds my manga collection. The biggest reason for this is simply because I find anime more enjoyable and engaging for me to follow. I've tried to really "get into" manga, but it just didn't happen for me. I was never big on comics to begin with, so jumping into manga wasn't easy.

That's not to say that I avoid manga at all costs. I am collecting four series at the moment, but they are all based on the fact that I have seen the anime and thouroghly enjoyed it.

Naaaah, manga and anime are equally nerdy, so don't concern yourself with that. They're just two different TYPES of nerdery, and personally I'm more in tune with the appeal of one than the other. Laughing
