Personally I think the last great anime that has graced us was Cowboy Bebop it not only was great it brought a whole new fanbase to anime in America.

bebop, while certainly a classic, was not the last one. there have been many other classics, but if your talking about impact on the american scene, that reduces the list a bit. Trigun may be closest to Bebop in terms of popularity, as well as Inuyasha. while it may not be as popular as the titles above, lain certainly deserves credit. anything from Miyazaki can be counted for drawing critical praise from the mainstream press. FLCL had a huge impact as well
as for titles that will likely impact america, i'd say Last Exile and Wolfs Rain. And of course Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will amaze everyone when it comes out

Personally I hate to call anything less than 10 years old a classic. While Bebop is popular now, it's still only 6 years old. I have no doubt it'll survive the next decade, but I'm weary against calling anything from the mid to late 90's a classic.
But that wasn't the question was it? What I think will become "blockbuster" classics are any shows that have generated huge fan bases, or have manged to survive the test of time. Sorry folks, like it or not Dragonball Z and Pokemon are going to be the titles people remember in 20 years. Just about everything you think is "amazing" now will become afterthoughts then.

I'm actually counting on Full Metal Alchemist to be the next anime hit in america. I think that once it runs for a while on Adult Swim, cartoon network will move it to Toonami where it can be seen at an earlier time and by more people (like what they did with Yu Yu Hakusho) i didn't really care for when they did this but hey, what can you do?
And Gungrave might earn itself popularity that runs it up there with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun

Well, going off Emerje's "10-year" stipulation, I'd concur with Pokemon and DBZ. I'd throw in Rurouni Kenshin and Bebop as well. When people think of "anime," and get the idea of "anime is porn" out of their heads, I think those titles really epitimize what's commonly associated with the genre. Honestly, for as much as I dislike the series, I think Love Hina finds its way into a lot of people's collections and knowledge.
EDIT: I'm slightly confused. Are you looking for the next BLOCKBUSTER/Popular title that will sweep America? Or are you looking for a title that will become synonymous with "ANIME?"

Yeah, I think Fullmetal Alchemist will be that hit. The characters are likable; the story is engaging; there's the token hot chick, musclebound guy, TEH GRATE 3V1L villains (based on the seven deadly sins, no less!), short 'n' spunky grandmotherly figure...FMA has all the cliched parts of anime and yet still avoids being cliche. If nothing else, a bunch of people will learn the word "alchemy" and its various incarnations.
As far as timeslot goes, both Bebop and Trigun are/were shown in the wee hours, and have gone on to great success. The only thing that could cause trouble is FMA's length compared to those two (twice as long as both). If Adult Swim anime goes down to once a week (which I seem to recall reading about recently...), that'd mean a full year to watch one series. Folks might get tired of waiting.

Wolf's Rain = 26 episodes, shown once a week.
InuYasha = many more episodes, shown once a week.
Granted, Wolf's Rain isn't pulling in the numbers InuYasha is, but people will still wait and watch.

even if they cut out all the violence, the show features the geneocide of a people who resemble the people of the middle east (dark skinned, somewhat religious fanatics) that would never make it past censors. the show is generally more mature than anything toonami is showing

When you say blockbuster classic I say your talking about two things. A blockbuster is a show popular at the moment. A classic is something that will still be debated about 5-10 years down the line.
Love Hina is a blockbuster, but probably not a classic. Crest of the Stars was never a blockbuster but it could be debated whether it is becomeing a classic.
Yes, Beebop and Trigun are classics and blockbusters which were helped helped by CN, but they were on thier way on their own.
The opposite was true of Blue Gender, neither a classic or a blockbuster, simply a decent show which got a nice "bump" from CN but will probably be forgotten in five years.
Inuyasha is nice but I wonder whether it will have have people talking about it five years after it's CN ending the way Lain or Eva, or Beebop or Escaflowne are still talked about or will it be a sightly more respectable Pokemon, popular for a time and remembered for the fans it brought in but fogotten in the long term?
Yes, it's blockbuster but a classic? I put my money on no, though I'd hedge my bet (unlike say Yu Yu Hakusho, blockbuster but not classic).
A blockbuster we know at the time, while a classic takes some time to sort out.
Of all recent shows I expect might earn Classic status are--
X-- Clamp pedigree and really interesting story and ending. Apoclypses are cool.
Haibane-- aBe pedigree and boards like this one seem to have a lot of conversations about it which will bring more people in over time. Also it is a genuinely original series with a lot of WTF? thrown in like Eva and Lain and a Bittersweet ending like Beebop.
Exel-- So absurd with a lot going on in the sense that it makes fun of everything. Also its seems to be imitated a lot which is a good sign.
Last Exile-Lot's of originality like with recogniseable roots like Eva, Beebop, Trigun. It's also from Gonzo, the up and coming studio of the day.
So, of the nly brand new show I'd only bet on for both Classic and Blockbuster status would be Wolf's Rain.
It has a deep plot, good reviews, cool characters and while it is on thin ice with an enviromental theme, it's far enough removed from the present day to make it unlikely to offend viewers. I've seen it talked about a lot on the boards for the quality of it's plot points and I suspect it will continue to be talked about. Also, the exposure on CN and the Yoko Kanno soundtrack should bring in some extra viewers.
I know of nothing that will promote Fullmetal Alchemist or Gungrave to classic status but I admit not to having seen either. I don't doubt they will be Blockbusters but "classic"? Right now, I doubt it.
All the Best,
Nani?

I think InuYasha will be the new Ranma 1/2 in the fact that Ranma 1/2 is getting quite dated. People will associate Takahashi with demons and jewels rather than boy/girl and water. And, I've never heard Lain ever talked about in circles other than anime circles...it's just too weird for casual viewers of the genre.
Adding to my previous question: Classic to anime fans or classic or ordinary viewers?
