Alright guys, I got me some editor approval to start this thread so here it goes. I really like the theme idea, but I think it needs some more structure. There are a bunch of repetitions, and I've called out all the ones I could find below. I think it's pretty straightforward, but let me explain my nomenclature. The phrase before the = is what currently exists (and in my view needs to be audited off) the phrases after (separated by +) are what I added.
The only worry I have about this is that if people who have seen the anime in question decide to click the Encyclopedia Audits without seeing this thread, they will be presented with something like: "is Sports (Boxing) a theme for Joe vs. Joe?" The answer to them is yes, but they won't see on the screen what the reasoning for the audit was, only the original source. They won't know that Sports and Boxing are already listed as themes, so Sports (Boxing) is repetitive. So let this stand as an encyclopedia suggestion as well. (I think that was suggested before, but I second it.) My validation for splitting themes: Break everything down into the smallest units that make sense. Ex: Sports (Boxing) = Sports + Boxing (Dan42 says...) This way, somebody can search for Sports and they will find Boxing, Tennis, Baseball, Curling, Badminton, Table Tennis, Golf, Darts, etc. If they want only boxing anime, they can add the boxing tag, and all the boxing anime will be at the top of the list, or they can only search for Boxing, and only the Boxing will come up. Ex: Time Travel =/= Time + Travel An anime about Time Travel and an anime about time and travelling are different things, one would be considerably more boring than the other. Martial-Arts = Martial Arts Mature = Delete This is an age rating, not a theme. Mature AND Adult= Delete This is an age rating, not a theme. Sports (Boxing) = Sports + Boxing Sports (Figure Skating) = Sports + Figure Skating (insert song), by fiction junction yuuka = Delete Fiction junction yuuka should be looked up in the encyclopedia under people, not a theme. World War II = World War Two Historical (England) = Historical + England BL = Yaoi (?) Not sure on this one guys, does BL = Boy's Love = Yaoi? Shounen ai/Yaoi = Shounen ai + Yaoi Sounen ai = Shounen ai Ping Pong = Table Tennis Cycling = Bicycling Loli = Lolicon Lollicon = Lolicon Wrestling vs. Pro Wrestling We need some sort of consensus on this one, and it might have to go to the editors for final word. Does Wrestling = Pro Wrestling? My goal is to bring attention to any errors that are slipping through the cracks, and to make the theme search function better. If you find anything that you think fits the bill, please post it here as well. |

How are we supposed to help? I haven't really looked deeply into editing the encyclopedia, but don't you need special rights to remove or change things you didn't add yourself?

You can audit themes, and if it ends up with a 12 vote differential, it gets removed. You need to click the little (i) button by the theme, then click "Audit." Depending on your encyclopedia settings, you may first need to click "Look up sources" at the bottom of the page, in the blue box, to display the (i) icon.

I think this show is not Mecha themed needs to be removed (although it is a valid statement; Kurau is not about Mecha).

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Kind of rounadabout way to change things though. Wouldn't it be easier to have a few encyclopedia editors who can set things right single-handedly?
Anyway, let's see.. 'auto racing', 'motorcycle racing' and 'speedboat racing' should be merged with 'racing'. 'hot girls' looks rather subjective, and might be merged with 'bishoujo' in some cases. 'pro-wrestling' should be merged with 'wrestling' as it's clearly a subset of that. 'school life' could probably be merged with 'school'. What about 'shinigami', 'gods' and 'demons'? 'shinigami' seems very specific. 'smut'? Wouldn't that be part of either 'ecchi' or 'erotica' (genre)? 'space navy' is probably better represented as 'space' + 'military' 'organized crime', 'crime', 'crime organizations' and 'yakuza' can probably be merged. Pfft. Too many to mention really. |

I just came across one for "priests and priestesses" in with the reasoning as replacing "miko". I don't really like the former theme because it sounds awkward, but it is more general. On the other hand, the series is Moon Phase, and it's quite a minor theme anyway so I think I'd just vote them both down.
Also, it looks like there are four shows with "hentai" as a theme. |

Heh. That was me trying to help out.. Since 'miko' had only one use, and 'priests and priestesses' had several more, I figured I'd add that one to Moon Phase, and vote down 'miko'. Was that not a good way to go about it? Again, this seems like a very cumbersome way to get rid of redundant theme tags. If someone had admin rights for the database, they could just fix it all in a few hours, instead of many of us mere mortals having to vote for every little change. |

I think Dan has said before that the reason the editors don't do that is it would defeat the purpose of creating the audit system (which was created to help relieve the work burden on the editors). |

Anything that the audit system does an editor can do faster. Problem is that there is so much work for the editors that we're not able to keep up with it. Th audit system frees up the editors and allows them to focus on aspects that aren't part of the audit system yet. Like approving new titles. -t |

I have to look all of this over a bit closely, but there is one that I GREATLY disagree with:
World War II > World War Two I have NEVER seen it written "World War Two". I have seen "World War II", "WWII", and "WW2" (rarely). But NEVER "World War Two." |

I cleaned these all up like a few months ago or so. But it looks like a whole new slew of them have showed up now...
I got rid of the obvious ones.

That was not the only purpose. I want to achieve a workflow which is more collaborative. Instead of unilateral decisions I think it's better to involve several people in the decision process to increase the number of viewpoints and ultimately increase the quality of the decision. Although the audit system doesn't achieve this very well yet, I'm going to work on it in the coming weeks. Encyclopedia Editors: please remember that you can prevent something from EVER being added again by setting it to SPAM. This is what I did to prevent genres from being added as themes. You could set "auto racing" to SPAM with the message "this info should be added as separate themes "cars" and "racing" |
