How common is it for most anime fans (like you guys) to keep up with watching more than one show at a given time? I don't necessarily mean stuff that's airing back-to-back on television, but shows that you've commited yourself towards buying on DVD or are watching through fansubs.
And if you are able to watch more than one simultaneously, what would you say is your limit in the number of shows you're willing to commit yourself to?
My personal limit is three, though I typically can only handle keeping up with one or two whenever I am able to set aside time for anime. This isn't because of time constraints, but mostly as way of dedicating my full involvement in as few shows as possible; sort of as a way of getting the most out of an anime emotionally without being distracted by another show "interferring" with it (hope that made sense ).

I'm often amazed by how many shows people are watching at once. There are some members here (Randall Miyashiro comes to mind) that juggle a lot of series at the same time. For me, I think things would start to blur together a bit.
I guess it's not really that hard to keep everything straight between them, but I don't enjoy trying to watch more than 2 at a time on DVD and one of those is usually something I am rewatching. I suppose it's just a matter of personal style, but I'd rather watch one thing from start to finish and then move on to something else than try to have a bunch of titles going on at the same time.
If you are watching from week to week on TV, or watching a series as it is released and have to wait between episodes or DVDs then you don't have much choice but to wait for the next installment so I can see why under those circumstances you might be working through several series at once. I just tend to wait until a whole series is released on DVD before I dive into it because I don't like to have long waits in the middle of the series.

4 going right now, but most of them are short series (13 or 26). Only one is long (50).
The only thing I try to do is to not have multiples of the same genre when viewing. Otherwise having a change of pace available is nice.

I pick a "Watch List" for each season. It's been a very short watch list for the past few seasons (2-3), only to have a whopping 8 shows this time around. I'll also keep up with longer running series that haven't finished its run but aired in previous seasons, like Soul Eater. I can watch as many shows simultaneously as I want generally, as long as I'm able to get into the atmosphere of each show right before I start watching each episode. Given that the shows I choose to follow are actually of quality (or downright entertaining), this generally is not a difficult task.

I try very hard not to. Usually my maximum number is three, but it wavers in and out. It seems like even if I give myself a "maximum number," I'll end up focusing more heavily on one series than the others, and finish it, then the next, then the next, breaking up my attempt to watch several at once. I just don't function that way.
I eat my food the same way too. Finish one type of food, then the next, then the next. Odd.

I can watch 4 shows at the same time but no more. It also depends on the length of the show. If it's 3 12 episode series I can take on more than if it's 3 26 episode series.

Oh all the time. I try to watch One Piece and Naruto Shippudden every week.
Right now i'm working on Shuffle, Ghost Hunt, Ghost stories, Marmalade Boy, School rumble S2, Ranma 1/2 S2, Saint Seyia When they Cry, Lucky Star, Hare+Guu and Nadia. There are a few more in there, but I they aren't coming to mind right now.
I watch a few episodes a day, or if I'm too busy one episode. I watched a few episodes of Marmalade boy today actually, and I think the reason I can keep them separate is because they are so different.

yeah, for some reason i can only watch just one show at a time. i keep a list of animes i want to watch after that one im currently watching is done with. i think i only watched two anime shows at once and i didn't really like it....iono why... but it seems like im like "wait, was it this show where he killed the other guy?" or something like that. Then i have to sit there and think for a bit and realize it was another show >.< But i do Watch Naruto, Bleach, and Tales Of The Abyss and stuff weekly.

I'm following about a good 20-25 shows. It's not that hard. About half of it are currently airing fansubs, so I watch those as they come out, and the rest are shows that I'm working my way through. I never get confused because each show is so vastly different. I don't see how people can't watch more shows at a time, it's really not hard unless you have some disability.

Huh, I guess I'm at the extreme end of the spectrum. I consider myself "active" on 40 titles right now between fansubs, DVDs, and TV. Now, that's not rapid-fire, consecutive watching, that's on and off in the course of a month or so. Depending on release dates and what not it probably comes closer to watching 10 different shows in a week, but 40 different shows in a month time is pretty common for me. As it is I've watched episodes from four different shows just today.

That's pretty much what I do, except I only have 30 series on my watchlist right now. I'm also reading manga, I try to read at least one volume a day, so I can't watch more than 30 series. I also want to enjoy my other hobbies (playing video games, internet, watching TV, etc) and I also have school.

It does. You know, watching so many shows at a time is probably the reason why I haven't REALLY enjoyed an anime for months now. I just realized that when I was only watching 2-3 shows at a time, I enjoy anime more. Plus sometimes I get confused, cause there are times when I'm watching similar anime and I get the characters/storyline/etc mixed up.

Well, I suppose I could watch one show on my computer monitor and one on my TV, but I don't know if I could take it up to three with the portable DVD player...oh, you weren't asking about simultaneously watching multiple shows at once? I did do that once, but one of them was a rewatch.
Yeah, I do seem to have a dozen or more shows running at any given time. About 3-5 of new-season shows from the fansub circuit, a few ongoing series from the so-called backlog to work on, and then a few rewatches. Luckily, the rewatches take less mental effort since I'm just re-experiencing things that are already in my memory. If you check the "What are you watching right now? Why?" thread, you'll see that many people juggle multiple series.
And may I remind people posting in this thread that it's about the idea of watching multiple series, not listing what you actually are watching. I trust you all know where to go for that -- just don't actually list items with no other content to the posts.

Since, for anime, I'm generally watching whatever currently-airing fansubbed titles have interested me in any given season, I have to say that yes, I follow more than one title at a time, because I have no other choice if I don't want to wait months to see it. However, since my taste is pretty specific (not claiming it's "good," just "specific"), that's usually only a handful of titles (maybe 2-4) so it's not difficult. I do however often find myself juggling way more drama titles though (currently 7), since it seems more older (complete) drama titles interest me than older anime titles, so the complete series are available to me more often. Having said this, though, if any title (anime or live drama) really captures my interest and it's available in its entirety, I'm more than likely to marathon it in a few days.
P.S. I'm really in awe of the people who can juggle 10+ anime series. To me it would start to run together at some point; maybe that's why I'm more of a live-drama fan.

Answer: No, not really.
As with video games, or more commonly MMO's, I only usually STOP playing(watching) one thing to go to another because of some specific reason that I wanted to stop. If I didn't get bored/annoyed/frustrated/whatever, I'd rather do everything from start to finish before going onto my next.
That said I'll usually have 2 going besides my weekly shows which only consist of Naruto and Bleach. I had D. Grayman going for awhile, but it has seemed to finish(and I've put off watching the last 2 episodes..). If I knew that Naruto or Bleach would finish sometime soon, say in the next year or less, I'd probably stop watching them and wait to get the rest all at once.
I consider myself an intelligent and aware person but I just find it hard to keep up with characters, plots, back stories if I was into a lot of things. I mean seriously, I've watched anime "hardcore" for about 4 years and while I know a handful of phrases and common japanese words as well as basic pronunciation, I constantly forget character's names(usually just japanese ones). Just one example that annoys me when I take breaks from a show.
Also, I don't like thinking about hypotheticals like if two characters start talking and there are hints at things you've seen before and other slight nuances(but not outright), that I could miss them since my anime plate would be too large and this specific show doesn't have enough of my attention.

Ha! I thought I was the only one that did this. People make fun of me for it all the time. Maybe our personalities are helping to determine how much anime we want to watch at once?
