They kept the original names for the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, didn't they (and wrote in the margins something like "name on TV: Tea Gardner")? ~_~

next time, read the article. Viz are using FUNimations new names for the series/characters, as opposed to using the original Japanese ones.

I suppose it isn't too big a deal, however, I believe that alot of Americans who buy manga are already pretty big anime fans. So I don't think changing the names in the manga to match the TV show was really needed, but whatever floats their boat.

I agree. Why fix it if it ain't broken. Viz should know very well how picky we are. They should know to keep things as close to the original as possible.

Agreed.
I can see why they did this, easier to market to casual fans and such but I still disagree with Viz's decision... Well, hopefully we hardcore fans get a reprint with original names and title later on.
I guess I have to buy the anime now, at least FUNi will leave the original names to subtitles, now if only they would make decent subtitles instead of dubtitles...

We shouldn't forget either, that there is a notable fraction of the market which are young children and if you present them a name like Shin'ichi you'll get oodles of kids out there calling him Shine-icky or any number of odd things. And most people don't have any intrest (and continue to buy things) that is beyond their comprehension.

And if you don't like it, you can always scribble out the names and change them back to the original Japanese names.

Or they could package lil white strips of paper with the original names on it w/ some glue, and you can restore the names yourself! What? Tokyopop said it would work! Seriously, brillent idea! If I ran my own manga company, I would do it!

Huh? Funi's dvds usually have two sets of subtitles, one for the japanese script and one for the english script...

So what? It's not like Viz is editing out huge chunks of the manga. Name changes in manga is not some new phenomenon.

Viz has been kind of vague on the subject, so I'll wait until the final product comes out. N/M. I don't even see how it can be compared to Conan the Barbarian. By their logic, NBC would have to change Conan O' Brien's name.

if they want to change the name that's fine. It's their product and they need to sell it they way they feel is best.
As a consumer, I get a similiar option in that I get to spend my money as I see best, so I guess I can cross this manga off my pull list and put it towards another manga that will soon be flooding the market.
