Well iam in the middle of creating an anime Site, where you can watch Anime movies online ( third party ).

As i find the plot summaries from ANN very good for the movies i need, iam going to question this:

Am i allowed to copy those anime movie plots onto my website?
with source ofcourse
- Do i need to link back every single movie plot? Or is it enough to provide a good visible sitewide link?

I have read the copyright statement, but iam still a little unsure if i can do it or not.

Thanks and regards,
Seb

To extend on what Dan said: pirating is illegal. And, of course, is ultimately frowned upon at sites like these. I'm sure Anime News Network would not want to be apart of such a project.

Yeah, it seems a little silly to ask permission to use ANN's summaries when you're planning to create a site that illegally distributes anime without any kind of permission. Besides, why bother creating another file sharing site. There are already so very many out there, it's just pointless. Why don't you do something more worthwhile. Maybe open another Starbucks.

First of all, thanks for being ontopic.....

secondly: its not illegal, iam not selling anything nor am i hosting any of these movies on my server and i dont offer downloads. I just link to the video sharing sites who offer the movie for online streaming.
Therfore responsibility cannot be given to me. If then the sharing site have to take responsibility and take those vids offline, so they cant be watched online anymore...

Think before you post any of those stuff please....

There are already two websites doing the same thing; one for anime and one for manga. I love and hate them at the same time: they are the only two databases that can rival or even surpass ANN's Encyclopedia, in both quantity and quality. I just don't understand how could those two seemingly non-profit yet still illegal sites could recruit (either volunteer or paid) talented staff to maintain respective databases. However, many of their plot summaries are stolen from ANN and we certainly don't want to see another one coming up. Mad

By the way: judging from the way you write, I'd say that you are way behind them. Twisted Evil

Ok so I thought about it...

According to the ANN Copyright Policy: If you would like to reproduce any material from Anime News Network in a way that is not covered under the above guidelines you must contact us and obtain our explicit consent first.

So if you plan on "copying" ANN's plot summaries I suggest you contact the appropriate member of staff. Secondly, as dormcat said, NO STEALING! Ask first. If your request is denied it is not encouraged you go about using such content.

Also: pirating is illegal - I do not see how it is not. Pirating means someone is reproducing and offering content previously / currently copyrighted to a company WITHOUT permission thus making it seem as if a person was claiming it as their own. No I am not talking about you or your website, I'm speaking on pirating in general, thanks.

Well, thank you gage, then i will do so.

And thats the reason why i asked first here, i actually dont plan to steal content.
If it is denied, then i rather write some short plots myself or ask visitors of my site to do so. They may be bad, but well.

I know that with the piracy, tho thanks for notifing again, and stating ( the first one ) that your not talking about my site.

Regards,
Seb

Hi Seb,

A couple clarifications, if the content is actually available on your site, even if you aren't hosting the files, you are liable for damages. It's a long read, but if you're going to try to skirt copyright laws, I suggest you read the DMCA.

In short, if website B unlawfully hosts anime, and you inline it, you're breaking the law.

If website B unlawfully hosts anime, and you just link to it, you're much safer. Personally I wouldn't approve though.

Of course, if you inline movies that have been legitimately put online (for example anything on Funimation's Youtube Channel) and you do so in accordance with Youtube's policies, then you're completely fine and not breaking any laws.

As for ANN's plot summaries, no, we will not allow them to be used in that manner at this time. We do however have plans to open up the encyclopedia a bit in the near future.
