good places to start with jrock/pop are dream, utada hikaru, ayumi hamazaki, penicillin, x japan, the pillows, larc en ciel, etc. you could probably find a similar echo of what's popular here from there pretty much everywhere else. i'm only a very passive fan.

Well, you can listen to some music at http://www.japanaradio.com. They have a somewhat limited collection band-wise, and especially anime-wise, but they're not bad. My personal favorites are L'Arc~en~Ciel, Hitomi, Judy and Mary, and a few others. And then there's some oldies that are nice, like Dreams Come True and what not.

I cannot recommend Guitar Wolf enough. Not only are they garage/punk in the spirit of angry East Coast boys everywhere, they're damn fine actors.
Balzac is also highly recommended, especially if you like the Misfits. But if you like the Misfits, you've probably already heard of them. Whoops. Cornelius, if you like your music computerized, alternates between metal-shop loud and easy-listening. Starfruit Surfrider is a nice track of his if you *must* sample. A good friend, who knows his music, can't stop talking about the Pizzicato Five, though I am too frail to listen. Pink Lady's got that late 70's kitsch appeal. I think they had a track on the Blow soundtrack. Have fun with it. |
