Are you kidding, who even judges these things. Do they switch off every other year or something, it seems that way from the ratio of mindless to brilliant winners.

Which selection prompted this reaction?

I was a bit surprised by Legend of the millennium dragon --- I've not seen it, but I've heard sufficient criticism of it that I stopped being interested in seeing it.
It's sad to look at the list of past winners (e.g., Tatami Galaxy, Dennou Coil) and reflect on their absence from US shelves.
But it's good to see Shinbo finally get some recognition for his talent and imagination as a director.
I just re-watched rain town the other day. It's a marvellous short animation. I've been hoping to get a chance to see Muybridge's Strings since I first read about it here.

That's what happens when you give a good director something that's actually worthy of him. Shinbo's worked on a lot of awful projects in his career, churning out two series a year, and his "creative style" generally tends to be pretty phoned-in as a result. I've only just started watching Madoka Magica and I can already tell it's going to be much better than his last, I dunno, 5 or 6 projects.
