I wanted to add that AICN Anime linked an About.com review with Mashima here, and an interview with Kubo here.

Quote:
I absolutely love it. I also like the fact that the roads are wide.

I love reliable public transportation, myself, so don't make Japan like Cali, please.

Quote:
When I was a kid, living in the mountains, my grandpa used to bring me discarded manga that he'd find lying around.

It would have been an interesting follow-up to ask why his family was living in the mountains.

Quote:
What was your favorite manga growing up? Dragon Ball...
Was there any other manga, anime, TV show, even a video game, that inspired you to become an artist?
Dragon Quest....

Interesting that he's into Toriyama, since Mashima's own art comes off less "beefy" than that of Toriyama.

Quote:
Were there any particular movies that were a strong influence on you? Braveheart ... Lord of the Rings.

I'm guessing he's referring to the Bakshi film, since Jackson's stuff didn't come out until he was established.

Quote:
Do you have a favorite superhero?
Spider-Man.

He seems like the only popular Marvel one in Japan. Why no Silver Surfer love? Crying or Very sad

That's funny with his "No comment" in English. I get that from quite a few Japanese people I know when they don't really want to express something they know they either can't answer or do not want to answer.

From the about.com interview.

Quote:
Q: Is there an animation studio that you would you most like to work with? Hiro Mashima: Pixar!

Just my cheap Nikon Coolpix L3. I didn't know we could take video and that's all I had at the time! heheh I should've taped the whole panel, now that I think about it. It seems like the audience was disappointed that his inspiration was Dragon Ball! heheheh I for one love Dragon Ball, so I found it amuzing!

I'm guessing it's because of the Spider-Man tokusatsu show, plus the Ryoichi Ikegami manga. Or was Spidey big in Japan before that?

His art is definitely similar to how Dragon Ball is drawn with the simple clean lines approach (If the previous video was of any evidence). I often think I'm more reminded of how early Dragon Ball characters were less "beefy" when I see Fairy Tail. Same for One Piece so it's not really surprising that Oda's and Mashima's art styles are often compared given that they have the same manga-ka for inspiration for their art styles.

Given how current chapters in the Fairy Tail series are, I really think Mashima show allow it to become an anime series when given the opportunity. It could really become the next big hit over in Japan. If his "No comment" response is garnering towards "Working on it", consider me a happy fanboy.

Cool interview, I am enjoying his manga as well, even bought the rave master dvd's off of amazon, to bad they were not all released, oh well. I need to finish the manga off, but I laugh a lot at fairy tail. Keep up the good work, sir !

Oh, and whats this new project that was mentioned in the question about names ? I did not see anything about it in the encyclopedia.

Also, a Fairy Tail anime AND video game would kick ass... IMO. Very Happy

I think it's too early for fairy tail anime series, or we will get alot of fillers like Naruto and Bleach.

D.Gray Man got an anime announcement at chapter 80 or so. It's still running really close to the manga. Besides, I WANT Fairy Tail fillers.

His laughter at the end of that proves he doesn't want to say. I know that no comment means just that: no comment. But, the way that Mashima seems to have said that indicates that there just might be a possibility in the future and that we should be pleasantly surprised in a matter of time.

Mashima should've been asked what kind of video game he would like to see in regards to Fairy Tail. RPG, fighting?

D.Gray-Man got animated sooner probably due to its popularity in Japan and due to the fact that it is a JUMP title. Fairy Tail is also popular and the Shonen magazine it gets published in also has Hajimo no Ippo and Detective Conan and those got animated adaptations.

Fairy Tail is only a week away from its 100th chapter. Maybe we'll see a special announcement then. Wink
