I've fairly recently come to start enjoying the anime series of both Naruto and Bleach. And I noticed that both of these series have manga box sets coming out soon. Having never read the manga of either series, I have to wonder: are either of these series worth reading? Do either of the manga series go into deeper detail, more character development, et cetera? I know the manga is the original for both of these series, but how well adapted is the anime?
I've heard that the Nartuo manga goes into how Kakashi got the sharingan, while the anime doesn't. |

I don't know much about either series (personally I can't get into long-running shonen fighting series) but I know people who watch the anime who also really like the manga too. I'm pretty sure it goes into more detail than the anime.

What you're talking about here it Kakkashi Gaiden. I can't remember exactly which chapters it was, but pick up vol. 27 sometime, it pretty much covers the whole thing. But yeah, other than that, and other than a ridiculous number of retarded filler episodes(this part is also applicable to Bleach, although it's filler arc isn't nearly as bad), the anime pretty much follows the manga to a T. Although personally, I think one is probably much better off reading the manga for both. But honestly, that pretty much just depends on how much patience you have. Of course filler episodes are easily skip over-able, but at the same time I also feel like it interferes with the flow of each's storyline which I think plays a pretty big part in how powerful an effect it has on you. Patience is also required in your tollerance level for inconsistent animation and excecution; things being dragged out unneccesarily and whatnot. I'd say if that doesn't bother you about the anime and all you care about is the actual source material, then great! If not, then yeah, in reading the manga you're defintely a whole lot better off. Because the manga doesn't have nearly the same problems as the anime does in any of those regards. In fact if you were to read the manga I think you'd be almost shocked at how fast-pased both series really are!

I don't know about Naruto, but for Bleach, it's just like BroEl said: except for the addition of fillers in the anime, it's almost exactly the same. The biggest difference I can think of is that the anime didn't include some foreshadowing after the Fisher King arc, but that was only a couple of pages.

Bleach anime or manga: Manga. Definitely. While the anime is good, it loses some of the edge that's present in the manga's artwork.
Naruto anime or manga: Anime. Definitely, for Part 1. The anime has some amazing looking fights, and a great soundtrack. Just stop at episode 135, to avoid the filler. I'm not sure about Shippuden, because I haven't seen the anime. But judging from the feedback from fans, it looks like it's not as good as the first part of the series. So it's best to start at volume 27, which contains Kakashi Gaiden and the canon content that's spread around during the filler. |

While I'm not too fond of Naruto and therefore cannot give a good opinion on anime over manga, for BLEACH, I'd definently say manga. The anime is pretty good, but not as "intense" as the manga for me. Also, some of the manga volumes have extra chapters that don't appear in the anime as episodes, about things that happened before the anime started ("negative" chapters).

Thank you all for your opinions on the matter. I just preordered the Bleach manga box set, since I am more into Bleach than Naruto. But I will get the Naruto one at some point. I'm glad to hear that the manga is worth reading. All of the artwork I've seen has been fantastic.

There's no reason to waste your time with both the anime, and the manga; so I suggest sticking with the anime. The manga may provide more insight, but if you truly enjoy watching the anime; then there is really no need to get caught up with the manga as well.

I disagree. The way the manga presents the stories of both shows is different enough to warrant the following of both. Bleach definately has a cool factor that doesn't exactly make it into the anime, and the pacing of the Naruto manga makes it more enjoyable IMHO.
That said, catching up on both manga is expensive and space consuming, and I'd discourage it for that reason alone. But if you want to bypass the filler in Naruto (since you already ordered the Bleach box) then start at vol. 27 and go from there. |

Personally, having already gotten the story from the anime, I'd rather spend my time and money on other manga than retread it all again. Maybe sometime down the road if you want to revisit the story, picking up the manga would work.

There were a few bits at the very end of the Grand Fisher arc and in Soul Society that didn't get animated, but they were just hints and foreshadowing as Dorcas_Aurelia said. There may have been a scene here and there that didn't make it in, but the anime actually expands on a few things. Storywise, you aren't missing anything by just watching the anime. However, the manga is a bit more graphic than the anime at times as the anime tones down some of the violence, particularly after Soul Society ends. For example, in one scene, the anime shows someone loose a chunk out of their arm; in the manga, the arm is completely severed from their body. In short, the manga is great but if you've seen the anime you won't see anything new in the manga unless the anime gets canceled at some point. |

Actually if you're watching part 1 of the anime, it's not only a good idea to stop at 135 but also to skip over 100-106 as well. 
But yeah, the anime is definitely not a loss at all. Definitely not. The only problem is that one little hiccup in how dragged out and slow paced it can get even while watching cannon. That's why I say if you're too picky to look past that, then it's better to read the manga just for sheer pacing and execution. Other than that then yeah, it's probably best to start from vol. 27 onward after you're done all the way up to 135. |

Isn't one of those episodes about them trying to find out what Kakashi's face looks like? That episode was great. I got my friend to watch it, and he doesn't even like Naruto. |

I guess it just depends on what your tolerance level is for stupid humor.  I laughed pretty hard through that episode myself and liked it quite a bit, but others might not. I will say this though, it's FAR better than any of the other stupid hummor Naruto filler episodes....... >.>

That episode was actually adapted from a special manga chapter by Kishimoto, so it counts as canon. Though, plot-wise, yes, it is filler.
