I haven't watched much mecha, so for those of you who have, a question: are there any mecha anime prior to Eva in which the enemy mechs are of unknown or mysterious origin? I know in shows like gundam it's pretty much two armies at war; Eva's the first one I know of in which no one really knows the whole story on where the Angels come from and what they're up to.

Umm... Magic Knight Rayearth had a time... or two where they fought an enemy they really had no idea of what/who it was. ; dunno if that counts.
I forget if Nadesico was prior... but... they fought stuff they didn't know...

Not exactly mecha, but if memory serves, the Macross crew never really did figure out exactly where that big, all-powerful ship came from...

For Macross : Well, the protoculture that left behind the tech that the mecha are based on is pretty dang mysterious. The SDF-1, the hidden SDFs that are older, the hyperdrives are origin of humanity are big mysterious plot elements. Heck, humanity barely had a clue what the aliens were like.

Orguss 02, although you do eventually figure out where all the mecha came from.

Well in the excellent mecha designs from DANGAIOH OVAs by Toshihiro Hirano, Shoiji Kawamori and other talented individuals, you never know who created DANGAIOH. We also never learn the connection between it and Ramba's planet. As you may recall, the symbol of the people and the royal family as depicted in a flashback, displayed the identical symbol, as the one Dangaioh has on its palm prior to unleashing the PSYHIC WAVE! Anyone know how Professor Tarsan obtain the technology to create Dangaioh? It was never fully establish that he did create the mecha or the weapons systems it uses.
Also, as previously mentioned in ORGUSS 02 OVAs, the mysterious history of the mecha was IMO cleverly used in the storyline. Actually it also served as the focal point for the challenges our heroes had to overcome.
If you haven’t seen either of these OVA series check them out. However in the case with DANGAIOH rent the vhs by Streamline as Manga Entertainment butchered the dvd release, brilliantly editing it from 180 minutes to 70. WTF?!

We do end up understanding what the Angels are and why they keep coming to Central Dogma at the end of the series.
Macross is a good choice, though again, near the end of the series they figure out where the ship came from, why the Zentraedi showed up, and of humanities origins.

Ah, mysterious mechas from somewhere else eh?
If that's what you want, I'd love to suggest Tekkaman Blade.
Earth is at an intergalactic war with a mysterious alien race called "Radam." But one day, something falls from the stars upon a survey ship of the earth's forces, crashing into the ground. And two pilots discover the remains of what looks to be an actual human laying in the smoking crater.
The man is taken back to their base, and as he awakens, breaks out in a fitful rage claiming he is the only one who can stop Radam. After taking one of the pilots hostage for a little bit, he comendears the only working spaceship on earth and ascends to outer space to continue his fight.
Meanwhile, the two original pilots manage to sneak back on to the ship, and the mysterious man shows them just why he can fight Radam.
Suddenly, he pulls out this strange green crystal and calls forth his space armor and yadah, yadah, yadah....
It's not quite "giant mech" like Gundam or Evangelion, but it's a man-sized mecha show. But don't think he's the only Tekkaman in the show. There are quite a few others.
It's a bit difficult to find this show. It was originally called "Tekkaman Blade" in Japan, but if you've seen how Urban Vision butchered it into "Teknoman," just forget you saw that.
I've only seen the original in bootleg unfortunately, but hopefully you won't be as desparate and foolish as I was. Hope this helps!

I believe that near future mecha shows by nature will have an element of mystery to them. Where are they from? Why are they here? You can find these questions as the mysterious mecha invade the newly formed mars colony in Layzner (which takes place in the year 1999 lol). The nature of the aliens relation with humans is nicely unveiled in Nadesco. Gorg (like Nadia but with mecha) involves an ancient alien civilazation sleeping under the earth with strange ties to humanity. In Rahxephon, and the Megazone series, the general population is not even aware of the government cover up of the truth. In most of the alien mecha series, we (the audience) really know nothing about the aliens in the first episode, but usually discover that there are strange ties between the two races as the series progresses.
