I'm looking to buy some anime DVDs but can't decide which ones. The only anime movies I've seen are Akira and Ghost In The Shell, and the only anime series I have seen in it's entirety is Evangelion (which I thought was awesome), and my copy of Death & Rebirth is currently on the way.
So does anyone have any suggestions on what anime series or movies would be good to get? At the moment I'm thinking of getting the full series of Record Of Lodoss War, and maybe the Escaflowne movie (the fancy collector's edition set).
I also love the Rurouni Kenshin manga. Would the anime version be a good buy?
Thanks,
Cratus

Record of Lodoss War is a classic. It's basically an animated RPG, so if you're into the whole fantasy scene, it's an awesome choice.
If you like comedy, Trigun or Ranma 1/2 would be good series. (Ranma 1/2 is a martial arts comedy, whereas Trigun is kind of a cowboy-type comedy.....though that doesn't really explain it very well....)
If you like action stuff, Spriggan would be a good movie.
Kenshin is really good, but I never read the manga so I don't know how it is in comparison.

Regarding Rurouni Kenshin, it is great IMHO. The first 62 episodes follow the manga quite closely with some minor changes and some filler episodes. The biggest difference I noticed in the anime is the addition of two little girls (can't remember their names) in the Kamiya Dojo. The anime is also a bit less graphic in regards to death.
After episode 62 the anime goes off on its own and does not follow the manga. In the manga, this is right after the fight with Shishio and before Kenshin recounts his past. Basically, the whole Jinchuu arc is missing from the series. Many people don't like the third part of the series because of this, but I don't think it's that bad so far (I only have seen what Media Blasters has released).
However, the story of Kenshin's past is animated as the first 4 episode OAV. This is VERY good, but it is definitely darker than the manga version. Also, a small and very different version of the Jinchuu arc appears in the second Seisouhen OAV, but after that it goes off on it's own storyline as well.
Hope this helps.

Rurouni Kenshin is awesome for anyone who enjoyed the manga. I am a huge fan of the Samurai and this series. I highly recommend it for both technical and storyline aspects.
If you like giant robots or are a general fan of Gundam, then I highly recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th MS Team. It is a more gritty view of trench jungle warfare, as the characters are mostly federation foot soldiers.
Jin-Roh, the Wolf Brigade is excellent, but it is very depressing. It is a very psychological feature, and if you liked Eva, then it might be for you. In terms of the disc tech, its is pretty good, but nothing to amazing. If you run a dark TV is may be hard to see at some times.
Trigun is an excellent, funny series. I have not seen much of it, but it is also turning out to be pretty deep as well. In terms of technics, its decent. You will mostly appreciate some of the art over the actual DVD advantages.
Macross Plus is an awesome series disc wise and especially story wise. The DVD advantage is very clear, as the planes and tech designs are very clear. You will appreciate DVD here. The story is very deep running. If you are into action with a side of romance, its an excellent OVA. There isn't much to buy either as it is only two DVDs.
Cowboy Bebop needs no introduction. It is one of the most universally liked anime series ever made. The disc quality is good. the story is AMAZING. Regardless of if you have seen it or not, its a pleasure to own, despite some series I personally like better, like Kenshin. Cowboy Bebop is excellent.
If you have never seen any Miyazaki, or if you are just looking for an excellent feature, then Princess Mononoke should be on your list. The aniamtion and disc quality really shine here, you will be thankful you bought that DVD player! The story is very engrossing, and demands of the viewer understanding. I recommend it highly if you are looking for a movie.
I hope my opinion helps you out.

Eeeeey! I'm new here, the name's Hotaru! I have to sneeze right now, so my introduction will be cut short. Here's some suggestions from our personal collection
Well, let's see...
Gatekeepers is really cool. Pretty cheesy too, but it's meant to be.
Vandread, lots of funny, very enjoyable.
Crest of the Stars/Seikai no Monshou--a relativly short series spanning four dvd's. The story is great and i think pretty much any one can enjoy it.
Sen to Chihiro--though not in the states yet (legally anyway ) this is truly a great movie. It's clearly understandable why it did so well in Japan.
Ok, that's all I can think of!

Well, it really depends on your taste. Myself, I'm a fan of Comdy, Action, Drama, with alittle Mecha thrown in.
If you like Comdy with alittle Drama in the mix: Urusei Yatsura, Ranma ½, Love Hina, Vandread, Tenchi are a pretty good sources.
On the Action side, Record of Lodess War, the Dragonball series, Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun (There alot of comedy in the last 3.),
To round it out with Mecha, Robotech/Macross series, Evengelion, Gundam series, Gaint Robo.
I could go on, but I'm tried. So I just listed the most popular ones

Hmmn. If you're just starting out then I'll pass on some favorites of mine to you that I started with back in the day plus some more recent ones that are just too good.
Bubblegum Crisis: Great soundtrack and the animation still looks good today. Plus it's historically important to anime as it launched the careers of Kenichi Sonoda (who created another series I'll recommend in this) and one of the gentleman behind Tenchi Muyo whose name escapes me at the moment.
Dominion Tank Police: The first full series I ever watched (is it on DVD?). It's both hilarious and action packed.
Project A-ko: The parody of anime at that point. Project A-ko in its day was what Excel Saga is now. But even if you don't get the in jokes, it's still good fun and was the first anime I ever saw.
Gunsmith Cats: Cars, women, guns, crazed Soviet hit-women, more guns, Chicago, explosions, political mischief, still more guns, hacking, and yet more guns. This is Kenichi Sonoda at his best. Even if it is just a three part OAV. But the manga is huge an occasionally risque. Making it worthwhile as well.
Oh! My Goddess: I wonder why I'm the first to mention this gem. If you like romantic comedy then this is a masterpiece. It's funny and beautiful in the same breath. It should be out on DVD but I'm not one hundred percent sure.

Actually following Crest of the Stars/Seikai no Monshu is another series Battle Flag of the Stars/Seikai no Senki, and then its' sequel Battle Flag of the Stars II/Seikai no Senki II. It follows Jinto and Lafiel as they serve in the Abh Star Forces. I liked it alot and it does have more action than Crest of the Stars. Battle Flag has been liscensed for US release, so be prepared for it.

Excel Saga - One of the funniest things out there! And Extra heavy too! If you don't bust out laughing during every episode, you might be missing your funny bone.
Nab anything Goddess related. The OVAs, the movie, and the Mini-Goddess. All are worth it in their own ways.
Ummm... (taps head)
I'd say avoid the Revolutionary Girl Utena movie for now. You may love it, you may hate it. Depends if a coherent plot is required by your standards. (The TV series is good though, consider trying that.)

To go through some of the things you were considering...
Record of Lodoss-Real good OAV and certainly worth a purchase. I havn't seen the series(You can tell the difference sinse the series is subtitled Chronicles of the heroic knight or something), but I heard that it's nowhere near as good. Definantly get the oav, get the series at your own discretion.
Escaflowne movie-In my opinion this movie is crap. It takes all the characters from the series and just butchers the hell out of them. If you havn't seen the series and thus wouldn't be insulted by it in comparison then it might not be TO bad, but the fact is that the series is so much better that if you havn't seen it you really should be spending your money on it instead.
Kenshin-The filler eps are kind of 'eh' but it's worth it to see the manga storylines fully animated.
Series you hadn't mentioned that you should see.
Trigun-There's alot of similarities between the main character Vash and Kenshin and for that alone I'd recomend it to a Kenshin fan. First half of the series is almost all action comedy, but it wisely takes a serious turn just before that starts to get old.
Escaflowne series-see above.
Ranma 1/2-Really funny series.
Slayers-Really funny swords and sorcery series.
Cowboy Bebop-Save your money and watch it on CN network though. The edits, while there are relativly minimal and the dub is actually as good as the original overall(Sub and Dub each having their own strenths) Many people say this has the best dub ever.
Other stuff that doesn't take first priority, but if you've got the money go for it.
Ninja Scroll-For your bloody ninja action(Blockbusters actually have this if you want to save some cash)
Vampire Hunter D and it's sequel Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust-For your bloody undead action.(Your local BB PROBABLY has these two as well)
Noir-For your bloody...well ok, not so bloody, but violent as hell assasin chick action.
Stuff you should get, but not yet-
Excel Saga-Aya mentioned this, but I'd actually recomend against it now. It's mostly anime parody(Though non-anime gets it's share of parodying as well) which means the less anime you've seen the less you'll get out of it. I say check it out in a year or so when you've seen more stuff.
Rurouni Kenshin first OAV-I always say watch the series first, sinse you've read the manga that may not apply so much, but just to be safe go ahead and wait :) Also when it comes out I'd recomend against getting the second OAV series..ever. It's a sad ending to the series that contridicts the happy ending of the manga.

My tip would be:
Ninja Scroll - as for me a classic
Escaflowne the Movie - very nice, personally I find the series better but the movie (as for me) is really cool
Dragon Half - totally rocks, I just couldn't help to stop laughing after wtching mere 2 episodes of this
Serial Experiment Lain - weird, twisted, almost no action, but I liked it very much nevertheles...
Lodoss and Slayers - anyone who like fantsy and RPG (I'm a RPG and fantasy freak :)) will love this!
Hmm FLCL!!! This is THE MOST twisted sereis I've ever seen!
Cool worth everything. First you think what the hell is going on?!!? and then you just laugh and laugh.
and my personal top favourite... DI GI CHARAT !!
It simply rules-nyo!

Definitely go for Rurouni Kenshin and the Samurai X OVA's. Kenshin is my favorite anime so far.
Cowboy Bebop is great too and is universally well-liked.
Gundam is also good but there are many different parts of the series to choose from.

Here's what I suggest:
Action: Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, and Gundam Wing
Comedy: Trigun, Ranman 1/2, and Tenchi. (But even though I LOVE Tenchi Muyo, I don't really suggest it. It's very girly, but it does have it's action moments. I showed to a friend of mine who's a guy and he didn't get into it.)
Other anime I didn't want to put in categories that I suggest: Battle Athletes, My Neighbor Totoro, Inu Yasha.
