God, I hope not. I only saw the first DVD, but what I saw was a vile combination of extravagent, gratuitous violence and vapid anime rom-com. It was the worst case of tone clash I've seen since Sailor Moon S tried to blend mahou shuojo action/comedy with ideas taken from Lovecraft. And it's bloody, too. The kind of rampant gore and unpleasantness that appeals to 13-year olds and makes everyone else cringe. The kind of stuff that turned people off to comics in the 90's. At times I was convinced it was trying to legitimize guro the way lolicon has somehow become legitimized. People are continuously telling me it's the greatest thing ever, but IMHO the entire series should be buried twelve feet down.

Personally, I loved Elfen Lied. Any series with loli incest rape and girls peeing on the floor gets an automatic B+ in my book.
I think the manga is a lot worse than the series. I mean, you have to admit, the art isn't all that great. And in my opinion the pacing isn't as good. The diaper-wearing girl seemed really unneeded...she doesn't add anything to the story. And a lot of the moments handled more dramatically in the anime seemed a little bit too over the top and "silly" in the manga (I don't want to mention spoilers though)

Some people don't take it very sexual at all. Some people like it for a lot of reasons. Considering it has a 8.5~ on this site Bellos, your disgust for it or not, a TON of people love this anime.
In respect to the manga, I've heard it's not as good. I thought it went past the ending of the anime series, so atleast you could see more of the story. You'll just have to wait to see if someone picks it up though. The news will probably hit here first if a company grabs it.

Yeah, well, a ton of people also liked Yu-Gi-Oh! back in the day, and we see the truth today, don't we?
But you've got a point, one lone individual doesn't necessarily have it right either. Whatever, I'll just say that I'm neither surprised nor especially disappointed that it never really caught on, especially because the inevitable tide of worse-executed rip-offs would drive anime's reputation down...

To answer the OPs question, no. We won't be seeing it anytime soon, because nobody has licensed it, and we don't know if anybody is willing to license it. But, I wouldn't give up hope. Gantz was licensed a little while, so there may come a time in the future when we shall have the Elfen Lied manga over here, depending upon whether the context appeals to the American public and licensors/distributors. Seeing as how some of the content is questionable to begin with, as the anime was, that could hurt its chances. We will just have to see, so just keep an eye out for news from ANN.

Okay, I like the anime and all, but Jesus. The manga is absolutely terrible. The art is simply horrendous, the storytelling is jumbled as all hell as it tries to work its harem storyline to death with its GRIMNDARK bludgeon and throws bizarre fetishes at us for no reason whatsoever, and none of the characters are the least bit likeable.
I'm glad that it has so much lolicon in it just so companies won't ever even have to think of porting the damn smut rag.

Yes, the contrast didn't work all that well, but there was a story there, which would be harder to judge on the basis of the first four episodes. Ultimately, in the anime's canon, violence and fanservice for the sake of it wasn't the only point. Personally, I wouldn't cite the series as a masterpiece, but it had its good points.
To answer the OP, from what I've read of the manga, no, I don't think it's likely to be licensed, not least because AceRyonik is right about the structure and artwork.

I personally liked the anime. Could of done without the nudity (as i've said before) but the story in there is great. I would buy the manga if it was released to north america although I've never seen any of the art in the manga. But from what AceRyonik said I would have to check it out before buying.

I loved the anime, but I doubt the manga will come out without serious edits.
The violence in itself isn't too much mainly because the drawing is kinda crappy so the acts don't look as bad as they really are, but there is a TON of child nudity, child abuse, kids getting decapitated (far more than what you see on the show) or dismembered for fun, and multiple scenes where a child is about to (or does) get raped. Plus alot of the child nudity is semi-sexual, and thats like child porn.
I think alot of people are leery about releasing that in the US for fear of backlash. The story is good, but if you just read a list of what type of stuff is in it and the levels that its at, you'd be kinda shocked.

Technically, it's not incest because he's only her step-father and not biologically related.
But otherwise, yeah, the manga really isn't nearly as good as the anime; by which I mean besides unimpressive art, the anime is comparitively sanitized, and the parts that were removed are completely gratuitous. Plus, the "good guys" are only slightly less misanthropic than the villains. The continuation of the story after the point at which the anime ends ups the stakes by replacing Bando, Kurama, and Mariko with even more heinous characters while the plot turns it's focus more towards an absurd conspiracy that leads to aramgedon.
Plus, can you imagine a plot twist that makes Bando one of the most sympathetic characters in the series? It happens.

Is this plot twist along the lines of characterisation or attaching angst to him? I'm genuinely interested at the idea, but sceptical it can be pulled off well.

Astraea, this is Elfen Lied. Of course it doesn't pull it off tastefully.

*shrug* I was expecting angsty backstory, not actual substance, you understand.
As Dorcas_Aurelia mentioned sympathising with a character. I just wanted to check. As the wiki entry describes it, Bando seems to have some sort of random realisation of empathy and humanity.

It's amazing what an anime version can do to a character versus the manga version. In this case Bando was one who was made out to be a not so likable character in the anime, but from what I had seen of him later in the manga, you could see somewhat of a change. I have to start reading this one again.
