While reading manga, that is? (Ha ha, I had you worried, didn't I?) Laughing

Anyway, what I'm talking about is this:

When reading a manga after having seen some or all the anime, do you ever hear the voice actors in your head while reading? I know I do. If the anime has been dubbed in English and I've seen it (an example of this would be Fullmetal Alchemist), I'll normally hear the voices in my head while reading the manga. If I've seen only fansubs, I don't normally hear the Japanese voices though. Instead I'll make up voices in my head for the characters. If there isn't any anime, I'll do the same. In my opinion, it's a lot of fun reading a manga that way. It really enhances the reading experience for me.

Anybody else do this?

I haven't this by mangas, cause I see animes only in original with subs. But I have it by reading books. For example, when the first "Harry Potter" movie came out I allways have the voices of the actors in my head when I read the follow ups. So I understand what you mean.

Kinda. If I've seen an anime or live-action adaptation of a series I'm reading it'll usually affect my interpretation somehow and make me "hear" the voice-actors/actors. I discovered this first time with the Battle Royale manga and novel. It was impossible to shake away the voice of Tatsuya Fujiwara as protagonist Shuya Nanahara when reading, even if the stories contradicted somehow between the mediums. If I have no influences prior to my reading I just make up fitting voices.

I'll say more: When reading manga in English (there are few series translated to my native language worth buying) I imagine the dialogues and inner monologues in their original tongue. Gunnm plays out in a post-apocalyptic America and Berserk has it's setting in an alternative Europe so English works fine here, but when I'm dealing with stories set in Japan (most of my manga I believe) or places like South America (Eden) I try to imagine what it sounds like in Japanese, Spanish...

(I admit that when I saw the title of this topic I thought it would be a joke!)

I most definitely hear the voices of dub actors in my head, especially for any series I've seen a TON of in English. Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi-Muyo! are probably the two biggest offenders in that category....

Oh yes. That happens quite often. I think it is pretty normal actually.

And my brain invents voice tones for the regular books that I read.

This sort of thing has happened to me for years so it really seems rather normal.

Of course, when their voices start talking to you when you are NOT reading the books...then there might be some issues! Wink

Yep, that would definitely be a problem. I also consider it normal to hear or make up voices while reading silently. It's just your imagination at work. Reading would be pretty bland if one wasn't imagining anything in relation to the story. Now, making up voices (or even imitating the VAs) while reading aloud ... that's a different story. Wink

I absolutely hear the voices when I'm reading manga or anything else. Heck, my brain conjures up voices when I read people's posts too!

Even if there isn't an English VA for something, like the Claymore manga, my brain picks a voice and runs with it. (Hilary Haag's voice as Chloe in NOIR is what Clare sounds like inside my head for some reason.)

You mean I'm weird because I occasionally start talking like Naraku from Inuyasha? Oh darn, and here I thought I was getting better. Guess it's time to start back on the meds. Wink

On the few occasions I read manga I end up hearing the voices of the dub voice actors...I sometimes here the Japanese voice actors...heh though I don't know what there saying. It really just depends on which one I have seen, the dub or sub.

I think that most people do this. I know that I do. It would be too confusing to try and keep all the different characters straight in one's head with the same voice. Although I'm sure that there are people who probably only hear one voice (their own) as well.
It's natural to hear the anime counterpart's voice when reading if you have seen the anime. It's "their voice". Although I find it tough sometimes when I had read a manga and have gotten used to the voice in my head and then see the anime and the two voices don't match up. hahahahaha

I really need to read more quickly. Battle royale, not really, but I had different "voices" for the major characters. In Excel Saga I read as the English dub voices, and I'm certain to do the same with Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I do hear Patrick Stewart whenever I read Nausicaa though Cool

Also I sometimes have conversation with myself. But that's for another time! Razz

I always hear voices when I read manga. It just really enhances the feel of the story to 'hear' the characters instead of just reading what they're saying. It's especially helpful if a character has a unique way of talking (like a dialect or if they're shy) and it makes it easier to get into a story that has a lot of dialog (like Death Note).

....sometimes I hear the OP and ED songs too.

I always associate people according to their avatar. If someone has an avatar that features a character I know then I definitely imagine that character's voice and mannerisms when I read their posts.

Yes...it can get kind of annoying, because when I read Chobits, Chi sounds lame, and Laharl (Disgaea) sounds like a girl.

But when I read Shaman King, Ryu has that funny '4Kids-dub' voice. I try to give Lyserg a british accent, but it doesn't work....

This also happens with posts to me, lol

You sometimes hear the OPs and EDs, digitalkikka? That's pretty cool. The only way I'd actually here the OP or ED if if I'm actually listening to it while reading. I do enjoy listening to the the music from the anime (if I have it on my iPod of couse) while reading the manga.

That's a pretty cool way of doing it. I should try that sometime. It definitely would get interesting if that person changes thier avatar a lot like I do.
