Whilst watching Dragonball today, there was a scene that we think is a unforgivable edit. While Gokuu was fighting in "Muscle Tower", the ninja guy, who's name escapes me at the moment was hiding behind an american flag on one side. (the other side was a tree). Now, the ninja is obviously japanese and it would therefore make sense that he hid behind a japanese flag. But the edit didn't seem like a typical FUNi edit. It wasn't really jumpy or anything.

So, cookie, or answerman or anyone, is this a edit to try and squeeze in some american patriotism?

I didn't know, so I did a search for "dragon ball muscle tower flag" and came up with this link:

google mirror of http://www.comicity.com/dbz/summary/chap05.html

I doubt that Viz would've edited it into the manga, so I think it's reasonable to believe that the whole thing was part of the show, as written.. since it appears to have been in the manga.

its not an edit.
theres plenty of American references in that saga
for example the army is called the "RED RIBBON ARMY"
which is obviously a reference to the american flag which has red stripes(or white if you look at it that way Laughing )
also the names of the ranking officers in the army are RED, WHITE, and BLUE

There seemed to be a post 9/11 edit in Spriggan though. In both the fansub and theatrical version, when McDougall talks about his plans for the Ark, the male scientist says, "Americans are so arrogant", but in the dvd version, he says, "You were the product of an egotistical mind." Dave Williams keeps dodging the deliberate edit of that line, but I remember it clearly.

We always thought that the red ribbon army was like homage to Budweiser. The emblems look quite similar Very Happy

Funny, he looks japanese, hids behind an american flag, and the dub makes him sound french (couldn't help but think about Monty Python Wink ), talk about a really multi-ethnic guy!

French accent? I don't think so. My five years in french didn't count for nothing, you know! I think it's more a stereo-typical chinese accent, but that's just my crack-head way of thinking. Half the time i'm too zoned out to remember what the last line spoken was. Surprised
