What's up with this "memories" thing on Big O?
Does anyone know why their memories are gone?
Confused I don't understand what they're talking about (on the show)....

I remember at one point they hinted that spoiler[ the machines all attacked the people and then I remember someone saying later that it wasn't true]it really doesn't explain it.

Me and my brother were talking about it and he came to this Startling conclusion, He said, and I quote, "What if Paradime (sp?) was one big memory in it self"...ok anyway spoiler[I thought that something in the past happend between Roger and uhh Darn can't remember his name (The Guy who uses Big Fayual *sp?*) and something went horribly wrong and to prevent anyone from exposing it they wiped everyone's memory of it....Then somewhere along the line, Roger started to hate him for one reason or another] Well that is my thoughts on it...Although I have a horrible feeling that I am wrong. I have to tell you , the Big-O series is great but no one i know has been able to make any sense of it. They really dont explain much in the series ... I guess they just wanted to screw with our minds Smile

The ending pretty much said, "hey, remember the underlying mystery of the series? It doesn't matter, because I've got some half-assed pseudo-philosophical nonsense to spew as we gracelessly cop-out." So, at best, the memories were a red herring and whatever answer there was has been lost.

Memories are our personal history, and thusly who we are. They tell us where we have been and give hints to where we are going. Paradine's citezins lost their past 40 years ago, i.e. their memories, their sense of who they are. In trying to uncover the memories, they are trying to discover themselves. The truth can hurt and that is why some are trying to destroy the memories. THey don't want to feel the pain of understanding.

In other words, Big O is a medaphor for meditation.

Cool

Major spoiler so dont read it if you dont want some big giveaways

spoiler[

No one has any memories of what happen 40 years ago because they didn't exist over 40 years ago, All of Paradigm City and the majority of the inhabitants are holographic projections kinda like on Star Trek Voyager where they had that litle Irish Village. Think of that crossed with the game MYST and you get the picture. There are a few "real" people in Paradigm City and there are some androids whose purpose seems to be to steer people in the right direction(remember Big Ear? the informant Roger always talks to?). In season 2 there is alot of talk about the world is a stage and people are actors playing parts in a comedy called life, a reference to Shakespeare, and thats pretty close. The whole storyline is a sort of real life script where life imitates art.

Every so often the world is reset and whoever is the true inheritor of the world can reset the world however they see fit.The last person to reset the world was Gordon Rosewaters. Alex Rosewaters wants to reset the world in his own image and thusly become akin to a god, but it would be a false god built on a false foundation so someone else needs to do it but I wont tell you who.

And as someone else mentioned. Memories are how we define who we are and what we do. I am a unemployeed computer tech. I have the memories of the training and of doing the work, I have memories of where I live so I can remember how to get home. I have memories of my relatives and family so I can say hello to them and recognize them.

A person with total amnesia is in effect a non person. They have no prior knowledge of who they are, what they do, where they are from, where they need to go , or who are their friends and family or life experiences to guide them.

In addition, Roger, once the action is done, is satisfied. He knows he forgot on purpose. His memories may be lost, but it was by his choice, and he can live with it.

This discussion brings up an interesting question...

spoiler[

1) Is Roger real/human? Android?

I saw an episode where it lead me to believe that Angel was a real person, but Roger was just a robot. I didn't understand the entire episode because I haven't followed the series closely enough...however, it did seem that this was a the case.

Cool

spoiler[

In episode 13 - R.D., R.D. shot Roger in the arm and he was bleeding, so that implies he is human and some of the memory flashes he has later imply that he is human but with the ending...who knows?
