Wow. Otaku prices. "Store price" savings = $75.00 per box set. Yeah. Box set = 4 episode single. Reminds me of Geneon.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for LE extras and the like. Already have all 3 pre-ordered with TRSI. Thank God they're coming out 2 months apart, my bank account is already groaning.

As has been mentioned in a lot of discussions I have seen about the pricing: this is for the limited edition sets, which come with physical extras. This is for the major fans, the collectors. This is not for the casual viewer or someone just jumping into the show.

The regular Blu-Rays go for about $40 and the DVDs for $30. Yes, still a bit high for singles, but this is a niche genre within a niche medium. The standard discs will probably hit the bargain bins in a year or two like many others of their kind, and people who want to pay less can wait.

I'm going out of my way to support Aniplex by purchasing the LE editions of Madoka Magica. I've already bought and received my LE of Oreimo. Its probably safe to say that Aniplex is currently my favorite anime company right now. I think their LE are straightforward and not too gimmicky and the price is right from the collector standpoint. I'm glad the same company is also releasing standard editions that are a good value if you appreciate getting copies on the release date.

I wish they would do a LE DVD release also for those of us who want the extras with a budget (or unlike myself, those without bluray playing capabilities)... Oh well. Glad I'm not a fanatic, although I saw the first episode and thought the art and story were great for a magical girl show... and then I heard all the spoilerific things about it. After I pick up Oreimo I may get this.

Considering Hideki Goto's running the show, it should. Wink

I'm OK with it.

I can totally understand spending this kind of money if you are passionate about a show. I would spend that on Natsume Yuujinchou. (Though still, ..... ouch)

Cost is out of my anime purchasing realm. Maybe by the time a Value Edition is released someone will have licensed Bakemonogatari and the rest of Nanoha - which I would pay semi-otaku prices for. I still don't get why these anime aren't licensed here yet.....

heh, the pain threshold is just if you really got to have it...

I just hope that it doesn't strangle the show too much. While I love my LE's of Toradora! and Katanagatari because of the extra books/stuff, it isn't hard to see that it's a tough sell to a non fanfan audience.
That thses are even one step above those in price? Hope Shawn doesn't lose that bet.

OTOH, I would certainly pay such for Bakemonogatari and Isekai no Sekishi Monogatari or even Natsu no Arashi... but that is because I adore those properties. Prolly too narrow/too expensive for licensing currently, because they did well in Japan.

Best of luck to all involved... Perhaps those that just want DVD should partner with someone who wants the LE Blurays, since both will be in the package. I've already lent out my Katanagatari DVD's since I have the blurays too.

Heh, one friend I loaned them to: "damn you, now I have to go buy them!"

Well, at least they're putting out a regular edition.

Isn't that what regular editions are for? There are games whose special editions tack-on an extra 50 to 100 bucks on the pricetag. Sure new people that are unfamiliar with a franchise might buy a special edition but special editions are mostly for people that are already fans of the franchise.

This. I'm on a pretty tight budget and can't really afford lavish, expensive LE box sets. A total combined cost of $225 (using TRSI's prices) for a 13-episode series is too much, which is why I'm glad Aniplex is releasing SE versions of Madoka. At $40 each for the SE Blu-rays (again using TRSI's prices), it comes out as being only marginally more expensive, adjusted for inflation, than individual DVDs were eight years ago when anime sales were at their peak ($40 in 2011 dollars = $32.44 in 2003 dollars; individual DVDs from back then had an MSRP of $30). Granted, what we paid for anime eight years ago is more than what most of us are willing to pay for now, but at least it's nowhere near as bad as Bandai Visual USA, who charged $40 for the SE DVDs of Gunbuster 2, which only had two episodes per disc(!).

If only Aniplex would do standard versions of their other properties which have only had limited editions, particularly Kara no Kyoukai. I really, really wanted to buy it, but I didn't and still don't have $400 lying around to spend on a LE box set. Now it's out of print, so I couldn't buy it even if I could afford it now, and there's no indication that Aniplex will release a more affordable SE BD of KnK.
