I'm not even a fan and I'm offended by that statement. Almost every manga in any given genre looks the same as anything else in the genre, if it weren't for the fact that it looks like he traced images right out of these other manga no one would have bothered to say more than "Eh, a death note rip-off." (Story-wise it's almost an exact clone...) |

I'm curious as to when doing "swipes" became something to be looked down upon in manga. Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga devoted a whole chapter to the art of swiping poses.
Or was this a bit more blatantly plagiaristic? ------RM |

I wish we could compare. We need visuals.

Busted!!
Looks like another 2ch job: http://www.imagehost.ro/pict/22190205476d430d300d8.jpg http://www.imagehost.ro/pict/22190328476d43602f501.jpg http://www.imagehost.ro/pict/22190644476d4424e71b6.jpg There's more, but I'm being lazy. Anyway it's enough to get the general idea. |

It could be just over-reaction to the somewhat recent string of plagiarisms in manga but I really doubt it if the author admitted it. He could have been pressured into it by his publisher but that's probably pretty unlikely.
If he did plagiarize such popular works in light of recent attention that such plagiarism has gotten, MegaBaka is a really appropriate title. |

The apology note states that the author admitted to it. |

Judging by the comparisons provided in the update, I'd say it's a lot more blatant plagiarism. It's one thing to "swipe" a pose from a manga for reference, it's entirely another to blatantly copy the artwork. One of the scenes swiped from "MPD Psycho" has a clasped hand configuration that's virtually identical to the original. |

So was he made to open his stomach, or did he just lose a finger joint then?

More likely they confiscated his pencils and drawing table under the terms of the DMCA... (Side note: This is the perfect scenerio to use the Phoenix Wright Objection Maker... I just wish I knew what to say...) |

Uh huh. Have fun convincing me that One Piece, Detective Conan, Kochi Kame and Death Note all look the same. Comics and manga both have a wide range of styles. Anyway, I guess it's safe to assume this guy's manga career is over. I have to wonder why people still try to get away with this kind of thing. It might have worked 15 years ago but nowadays with the internet, it's pretty much inevitable that someone will catch it. Especially if you're cribbing from something as popular as Death Note. |

While I think this is a little unfair, I don't entirely disagree. In Japan, the plagiarizing manga is dropped and it's difficult for the mangaka to find work again. In America, Rob Liefeld can do WHATEVER HE WANTS. Waiting for Lost Brain to get a similar treatment here. |

Whenever I see plagiarism like this I can hardly believe it. It's pretty pathetic to copy someone else's work this exactly.

To be fair, Death Note's been plagiarizing from Kodansha, too. [I.E. Akira-related shit in the second half.] Plus it's art is derivative of Devil Man. And Obata must like Recca, because he copied one of the chocolate-eating characters from it for DN...[Panel for panel, too, I might add.]
