I appologize if this is the wrong kind of thread for this sub-forum, but with no "general" forum I was unsure where else it could go.
I realize it's a generalization to have a thread about getting into shape in a manga sub-forum, however I would think it's safe to say that most people who read mangas are not in shape (And I don't just mean "fat", skinny doesn't mean you're in shape ).
I think one of the better things to counter this would be to use your love of manga to help get you in shape. One of the biggest problems with people working out is the lack of motivation. In order to motivate, use manga.
For instance, do not allow yourself to read manga unless you're at the gym. Weather it's between sets or on an elliptical or bike (Only two cardio machines I can think of that leaves the hands free to be able to hold the book/turn pages...running [like real running, not treadmill] is far and away the best cardio you can do, but you can't exactly read and run in good form at the same time haha, and any cardio is better than no cardio), use it as a time to both read manga and get in shape.
This allows you to turn what woud normally be a nuisance to an enjoyable activity. There's the thread on here about how long it takes to read one volume, and most people seem to take 30 minutes-1 hour. So if you read one volume a day ontop of a cardio machine, you will get into shape very very quickly. Or use it to pass the time between sets to gain some muscle.
(Note: If you're just starting to work out, you probably won't be able to last a volume ontop of a cardio machine. When I first started working out I could barely last 10 minutes before my body had to stop. But don't worry, you will be able to last longer the more you go, and seeing results is one of the most satisfying things.).
I used to read books between sets, was at the library and saw they had manga and have been reading that since, figured I'd share the idea. Living a healthier life is a lot more enjoyable, trust me. (EDIT: If you can't afford a nice manga collection, the library is a GREAT place to get free manga. I'd really suggest checking out your local library if you haven't already. They don't just have manga, but anime DVD/VHS aswell)
Well, it's also a two-way street, you need to eat healthy too. But that doesn't mean you have to only eat celery and cabbage! There's a lot of good food that's also healthy, you just need to find it.

It's a nice thought but, most people already have to deal with the stigma of being an anime fan from just normal every day people at work and or school. I can guarantee you it'd be much worse from the crowd that frequents the gym.
It'd be much nicer if, say you had an ipod video that you could watch anime on ...but I guess that would kinda promote fansubs -_-

Thanks for the response
I understand what you mean.
But I've personally never had any problems with people at the gym saying anything about what I read. And I have been going for quite some time. It's actually been a conversation starter a couple times from other people who enjoy anime.
I mean, I'm sure people have thought in their head "what a nerd" or something along the lines. But everybody judges everybody, it's part of life and one needs to say to themselves "fudge what some guy who I'm never going to talk, probably never see again after this day thinks of me" and just be yourself (as cliche as it is, it is effective).
I mean we also live in a different "age" than just a few years ago. Back in the late 90's/very early 00's I wouldn't tell people in real life I watched anime because it was a lot more underground and all of the "mainstream" stuff that majority of people had to go off anime was things like Sailor Moon and DBZ, ergo they thought it was extremely kiddy. But anime has become rather common place now-a-days. I've met a LOT more people since who were, at worse, indifferent about anime than people who would mock the stuff.
Though I gotta admit when reading shoujo/romance, I'm a bit more adept to hiding the fact that it's shoujo/romance, haha.
Ipod video is also a very good idea. And while I'm sure majority of people here don't watch anime on Adult Swim, that could also be something to use (Not many people are at the gym anyway at the time of night).
Though I also have to say, I live in a Uni town where the mass population is either a college student or over 60. From what I understand, college students are the biggest anime group. I'm sure it differs from place to place.
