Of course, the report fails to mention that Leah Dizon and Shokotan had absolutely horrid performances.
Those Enka ladies though, elaborate costumes FTW and Gackt's performance owned. Period. |

Yep, this is totally out of the talk, but Leah Dizon is damn fine, and Yep, I know you've heard this zillions of times.

I missed the first part of the program because we were out shopping, but I saw some of the other performances like Gackt. Now, I've lost a lot of respect/interest/care for Gackt over the years, but his Kouhaku performance was great. It was like an entire theatre production. But I must admit, seeing him sing in his samurai drama costume was a bit odd!

I saw clips of Shokotan and it was acceptable - not unbearable, but not great either. But then again, to the horde of Gurren Lagann fanboys, nothings matters to them ("Our drills are drills that will pierce any form of bad singing!" etc.)
. I heard that Leaz was terrible so I did not bother at all...and I also heard that Gackt was absolutely awesome. Haha. |

I enjoyed watching Gackt's performance on the 58th Kouhaku Uta Gassen.
And I enjoyed just watching Norika Fujiwara. Some other points of interest on the annual NHK New Year Eve special... Born in Tokyo, Japan on June 28, 1985, Ataru Nakamura is a postoperative male-to-female transsexual singer. Following male singer Hideaki Tokunaga and preceding male singer Ken Hirai, Nakamura sang "Tomodachi no Uta" on the 58th Kouhaku Uta Gassen. Ataru Nakamura sings the ending theme song, "Kakeashi no Ikizama," for the Reideen television anime series (2007). The enduringly popular Japanese boy band SMAP is a guaranteed ratings draw on television in Japan. Add in the recent, well published love story between SMAP leader Masahiro Nakai and reigning Jpop queen Kumi Koda (Kouda) who also performed on the show, SMAP proved to be an irresistible draw for television viewers on the 58th Kouhaku Uta Gassen. Late in NHK's 58th annual New Year Eve television special, SMAP performed a "Dangan Fighter Kouhaku Special," a two-song medley consisting of "Dear WOMAN" and "Dangan Fighter." Video Research Ltd. data show that, in the Kantou region of Japan (Tokyo, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, etc.), SMAP scored the highest television household audience rating of any musical act on the 58th Kouhaku Uta Gassen when they began their song and dance performance of "Dangan Fighter," drawing a 43.9% rating on NHK, Monday, December 31, 2007, 11:10 PM Japan Time. This was the third time in a row SMAP has been No. 1 on Kouhaku Uta Gassen. The highest television household audience rating of the entire program occurred at 11:40 PM, near the end of the show, when all the 58th Kouhaku Uta Gassen singers gathered together as a chorus for SMAP's smash hit from earlier this decade, "Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana," headed by SMAP - with MC loverboy Masahiro Nakai, perennial heartthrob Takuya Kimura ("Kimutaku"), and Koreaphile Tsuyoshi Kusanagi leading off with solos. |

I'll second the comment on Leah Dizon - her performance was wretched, miserably out of tune and forced. This was he case for most of the female singers, with the exception of Aiko, a piano w/ vocal that I can't recall (not Angela Aki), and the enka singers. The males were much better, led of course by the immensely popular song "sen no kaze ni natte."
Host-wise, if it wasn't for the perennial pro Tsurube, the hosting would've been totally in the toilet. I missed Yuki Nakama from last year, especially her reaction to the "topless surprise" of that one group... |

I watched this new years as well. I was quite annoyed at myself because I slept in a missed Angela Aki. However, i was told the sound system in this program isn't that great anyways, and i sorta noticed it while I watched the rest of the program. Uta Gassen's a long show however, and I would often take breaks during the enka singers.
